Dickens's Story
Meet Dickens....a handsome, spotted fella with glowing gold eyes, found as a stray in a parking lot where he was hit by a snowplow driver. Dickens sustained injuries to the left side of his neck and shoulder area. The snowplow driver thankfully rushed Dickens to ER where he was patched up and then was transferred to Second Chance. Like the Charles Dickens Tale of Two Cities "it was the worst of times, it was the best of times" for our sweet boy. Terrible because Dickens was hit and injured but good because his injuries were not life threatening, he healed, and now he has a chance at a forever home.

After a short time at Second Chance, Dickens was diagnosed with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) which is an immune-mediated disease caused by a mutated feline coronavirus. This virus causes a cats immune system to overreact, triggering an inflammatory response that damages blood vessels in the body and causes significant swelling of the organs.

Some cats have 9 lives and Dickens is a great example. Dickens FIP was caught early and with medication and loving foster care, Dickens beat the virus. Dickens, like many cats has herpes in his eyes. This is not alarming. Mom cats who have herpes pass this on to their offspring during the birth process. Kittens then may have weepy eyes from time to time. This is easily maintained daily with a gentle wipe of a warm cloth to ensure Dickens eye area remains clean. His vision is unaffected and he is not contagious. Currently he lives safely with other kitties in his foster home.

Dickens is personable, friendly, loving, and very, very playful. He adores to be pet and engage in play. Wand toys are appreciated. Dickens is eager for attention and will readily melt into your hand for pets. He loves to sleep with his foster Mom at night and she describes him as "perfect" and "not scared of anything". We think he is "cute as the dickens" and you will, too!!

Dickens gets along with other friendly cats and would do well in a multi-cat home. In fact, he would like another friendly, playful cat friend. Dickens has a great temperament so would be wonderful for a family with children, a couple or single adopter. He is a very versatile guy!

With an approved application, a visit can be arranged to visit Dickens in his foster home.

Dickens has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Dickens has an approximate birthdate of 06/12/2024. His adoption fee is $95.

If you are interested in Dickens or any of the cats at Second Chance Cats of West Michigan, go to sccatswm.org/adopt to fill out an application, or stop in during open hours on Fridays from 11-2 or Saturdays and Sundays from 11-4.

Please note - we can only adopt to those who live within a one hour drive of Grand Rapids.

Thank you!
