Meet Devlin, a most handsome 3-year old boy. He is friendly and outgoing. He hasn't been with us long, but is getting more playful as he is starting to feel safe. Devlin has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is a cat-specific virus that weakens the immune system over time but does not cause immediate illness. Devlin is healthy and does not require any special care. He can safely live in a house with FIV-negative cats with proper introductions and is currently sharing our cat room with several other cats. FIV is spread through deep bite wounds, not through casual contact. And there is not risk to humans. With proper care—especially keeping them indoors (which of course is a must for all of our rescues) and on a healthy diet—FIV+ cats can live long, happy lives. FIV positive cats are often overlooked due to stigma, but Devlin is not one you'll want to overlook.
