Coal's Story

Meet Coal, one of the Happy Campers litter! This handsome black kitten has an estimated birthday of May 17, 2026, and while his name might make you think of a little lump of charcoal sitting quietly by the campfire, Coal is actually a sweet, sensitive boy who just needs a little time to feel comfortable in his surroundings.

Coal is good with men and women and likes other cats, but he is definitely the shy camper of the group. Children are okay, although he's curious about them from a safe hiding spot rather than jumping right into the action. Dogs are scary to him, and new people can make him want to disappear into the nearest hiding place. He can also be nervous about pets at first, but once he gets comfortable, he really does enjoy them. Coal isn't a kitten who will immediately demand to be the center of attention-he'd much rather quietly observe the campsite before deciding you're trustworthy.

Once Coal does trust you, though, you get to see the very sweet side of this little guy. He doesn't always enjoy being picked up, but with time and patience, he can become quite the cuddlebug. Once he's comfortable enough, he'll happily curl up on you and fall asleep. Basically, Coal operates on a strict "you have to earn your campsite privileges" policy.

And every good camper needs a favorite activity, and Coal has chosen hunting. His prized catch is a fuzzy caterpillar with bells, which he proudly carries around like he just returned from the wilderness with the catch of the day. He is also absolutely devoted to lickable treats of any kind, so if you're hoping to win Coal's heart, you may want to keep the snack supply well stocked.

Coal is looking for a patient family who will give him the time and space he needs to come out of his shell and discover just how wonderful being loved can be. And because even the shyest Happy Camper deserves a feline buddy, Coal is required to be adopted into a home with another kitten or young, playful cat. With a little patience, a cozy place to curl up, a fuzzy caterpillar, and plenty of lickables, Coal just might turn your home into his favorite campsite.

Apply to adopt today: sayvanimals.org/adopt

(PLEASE NOTE: Despite what PetFinder, AdoptAPet and other aggregation software systems state - the first step is to submit an application via the link above, NOT send a message through their platforms.
