Cleo’s FAQs

What is Roanoke Valley SPCA’s adoption process?

Finding your new best friend at the Roanoke Valley SPCA You have an empty spot in your heart and home that only a pet can fill. Maybe you’ve visited the Animal Gallery on the Roanoke Valley SPCA website or seen some of our pets posted on Petfinder.com or other websites. Because many pets do not stay at the shelter long enough to have their photo taken and be placed on the website, you will find more available pets at the facility than online. So, what’s the next step to finding the perfect pet for your home? Meet the pets in person Our adoption process is simple! Come into the shelter and visit with the pets. Our adoption counselors will talk with you about the pets and help you find a good match for your home and lifestyle. You will want to allow yourself ample time to look at all available pets and learn as much as possible about the one(s) that may be appropriate for your lifestyle. We suggest adopters bring resident dogs, children, and family members in to meet the pet prior to making that final decision. Purchasing the basics, such as a crate of appropriate size, leashes, collars, and food and water dishes will make your new pet’s arrival much easier on everyone. Most items can be found for sale in our lobby, so if you fall in love while you are here, you will be all set. Hold Policy The Roanoke Valley SPCA allows reservations on pets at our adoption center only to allow another household member to meet the pet and/or to allow pet-to-pet introductions (typically resident dog meeting potential new dog). A 24-hour reservation may be placed on adult dogs weighing more than 20 lbs. A 4-hour reservation may be placed on dogs under 6 months of age or any dog weighing 19 lbs. or less. If the reserve requirements are satisfied and result in an adoption, the deposit will be applied toward the adoption fee; otherwise, the deposit is non-refundable. About your new pet All pets available for adoption have been behaviorally evaluated, examined by our staff veterinarian, and treated for any health issues. They have been tested for canine/feline diseases, spayed or neutered, received routine vaccinations (appropriate to their age), been microchipped, and have received a heavy dose of love and attention from all of our staff and volunteers.
