Checkers's Story

Checkers is a 17-year-old spayed female with a story as special as she is.

For more than a decade, Checkers called our shelter parking lot home. She became a familiar face to staff, volunteers, and visitors, faithfully greeting people and enjoying life on her own terms. A few months ago, we decided it was finally time for her to retire from outdoor living and experience the comfort of being an indoor cat.

Checkers has adjusted beautifully. She is calm, loving, loyal, and enjoys plenty of attention and pets. She's also quite talkative and loves interacting with her people. One of the things we've loved most about her is how welcoming she has been to other cats. She gets along well with cats of all ages and quickly became the unofficial "welcome committee" of the cattery, often greeting new arrivals and helping them feel comfortable.

After spending so many years watching shelter animals find homes of their own, it's finally Checkers' turn. This sweet senior girl is looking for a home where she can enjoy soft beds, loving companionship, feline friends if available, and all the attention she deserves.

Siskiyou Humane Society Inc.'s Adoption Policy
Adoption Policies & Requirements Our Philosophy Siskiyou Humane Society follows an open adoption process focused on finding the best fit for both the pet and the adopter. We believe in providing lifetime support to our SHS families to ensure long-term success. Adoption Requirements Adopters must be at least 18 years of age. A valid government-issued ID is required. Adopters must have no history of animal cruelty. Pets must be intended as indoor family companions. Adoption Donations & Compliance Fees We keep our base adoption donation low at $50. Total costs are structured to ensure compliance with California state law regarding sterilization: Fixed Pets: $150 total ($50 Donation + $100 non-refundable Compliance & Care fee). Unaltered Pets: $200 total (Includes a $50 refundable Sterilization Deposit). Refund Logic: The $50 deposit is refundable if fixed within 30 days. The $100 Compliance fee is only refundable if an outside veterinarian is used; it is retained if the shelter performs the surgery. Training Policy We advocate for humane, balanced training methods. While we prioritize positive reinforcement, the use of specialized tools (such as prong or electronic collars) is permitted only if used humanely and under the direct guidance of a professional trainer. Medical & Behavior All animals are adopted "as-is." We provide age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping, and a health exam prior to adoption. While we share all known history, we cannot guarantee future health or temperament.
