Checkers's Story
Checkers is a very sweet and playful young boy. He was brought when he was 4 months old, and came with with five other kittens, but we're pretty confident he was not related, as he is FIV+. Kittens under 6 months can test positive if they have a positive mother's antibodies; however, we did test Checkers when he turned 5 months and again when he turned 6 months: all test were positive.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a slow-acting virus that weakens a cat's immune system, making them more vulnerable to other infections. It's mainly spread through deep bite wounds, so it's more common in unneutered outdoor male cats. With proper care, FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy lives. Although Checkers has FIV, he is still very sweet and loving. He gets along with other cats, and would do best in a home by himself or with other FIV+ cats, like Flame, who he is with in our FIV+ room. Flame and Checkers often lay with and groom each other.
