Charlie's Story
Mr. Charleston Chew (Charlie) is very sweet. Since he came to the rescue, Charlie has definitely blossomed. He’s affectionate and is a master of giving love bites. Charlie has also more recently decided he is a lap cat and cannot resist snuggling into Kendra’s lap when she spends time with him.

Charlie was originally a community cat living in West Brattleboro, VT in the area of a few established colonies, but he was friendly with some of the people who fed him. It is unknown for how long he was homeless, and upon examination by a veterinarian he was estimated to be around 5 years old.

Up-to-date on his vaccines, Charlie was also neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and he tested negative for FeLV/FIV.

Upon intake, it was observed that Charlie’s canine teeth were broken. During his neuter surgery, the veterinarian was able to take a closer look at his dental health. It was recommended that he gets a thorough dental cleaning with possible extractions. At the end of September, we did take Charlie to get his dental cleaning, and one of his canines was removed. The veterinarian who completed the procedure said that the other three canines appeared healthy enough to save, which would require the three remaining canines to be sealed by an animal dentist. Charlie has thus been referred to a specialist for a second opinion and the completion of the procedure if we are able to keep his teeth. If the specialist does not feel the remaining canines can be saved, they will also be extracted.

Charlie has been a good sport about everything! He has been easy to provide oral medication to, and has healed well. Unfortunately, the specialist is booked out into December. However, we intend to financially contribute to the cost of the dental sealing and/or extractions with the specialist in hopes that this does not build a barrier for Charlie getting his chance at a furever home. We are happy to answer any questions.

When it comes to his furever home, Charlie would do well with a cat companion but it is not necessary for him to thrive. He's far more invested in his person and wants to be with them getting love and hogging their lap as much as possible. That said, Charlie did make a good friend in Boris (a fellow male rescue) before Boris was adopted. They were frequently found snuggling together. Charlie also frequently visits the kittens and enjoys playing with them at times.

While he certainly has come a long way since arriving to the rescue, he is still adjusting to an indoor pet lifestyle and would do best with older, respectful children. Young children may be too much for him.

This is super important: Charlie CANNOT live with dogs! After testing Charlie a few times with dogs, it is clear that he cannot stand them. He also displayed behavior that suggests he would attack a dog in his space via hissing, spitting, raising all his hair, and moving towards Kendra's dog offensively. To ensure the well-being and safety for all, Charlie can only go to a cat-only home.

Interested in adopting Charlie? Start the process by completing our online application!
