Charlie's Story

Four year old Charlie is waiting for his hero. Some cats arrive at a shelter and quickly find their way home. Others wait a little longer.

And then there's Charlie.

Charlie is a handsome orange tabby with a gentle soul, a loving heart and a future that depends on someone willing to see beyond a medical diagnosis and recognize the wonderful cat he truly is. He was surrendered to us at the end of January and he's only recently become available for adoption.

When Charlie came to us, he needed help. Despite having a bad tooth, he never stopped eating, never stopped enjoying life and never stopped trusting people. In fact, since arriving at the shelter, he has gained weight and shown us every day that he still finds joy in the simple things such as good meals, gentle affection and the comfort of companionship.

Unfortunately, Charlie's story comes with challenges. Our veterinarian has thoroughly reviewed his lab work and medical condition and determined that Charlie has a mid- to high-grade heart murmur along with underlying heart disease. While his bad tooth would normally be removed, the risk of anesthesia is simply too great. There is serious concern that Charlie may not survive surgery or could experience life-threatening complications afterward. For that reason, it is not recommended that the tooth be removed.

Faced with this reality, we have chosen to focus on what matters most: Charlie's comfort, happiness and quality of life.

Charlie doesn't know he has a heart condition. He doesn't know that his future is uncertain. What he does know is that he loves people. He knows that a gentle hand means affection. He knows that other feline-friendly cats make wonderful companions. And he knows that every day is worth enjoying.

What Charlie needs now isn't another medical procedure.

He needs a champion.

He needs someone with a big heart who understands that love isn't measured in years but in moments. Someone willing to open their home and their heart to a cat who deserves the chance to spend his days surrounded by comfort, kindness and family.

We know that special person is out there.

Maybe you've loved an older or special needs pet before. Maybe you've opened your heart to an animal that others overlooked. Maybe you simply believe that every cat deserves a home, no matter what challenges they face.

If that's you, Charlie is waiting.

His story isn't about heartbreak. It's about hope. It's about giving a deserving cat the chance to know what it feels like to belong. Could you be the hero Charlie has been waiting for?

Our adoption consultant will review his medical history with you in detail and answer any questions that you may have. We want to be sure to set up both Charlie and his adopter for success in their new life together. Feel free to email his consultant at arfcats@gmail.com with any questions or if you would like additional information about him. You are also invited to come by the shelter during our open hours and spend some time with him in one of our "get acquainted" rooms.

The shelter is open Tuesdays through Fridays 3:30-6:30pm AND Saturdays & Sundays 1pm-4pm. No appointments are needed during those times. If you are not available during those times, special arrangements for a meet and greet may be able to be arranged by emailing arfcats@bereaanimalrescue.com. Thank you for considering the adoption of a shelter animal in need!
