Cat Power, the affectionate diva for those who appreciate grrl cat energy's Story

Please read about the person-bereaved 10-year-old rescue cat, who ticks all the boxes for people who like and understand the special "catitude" girl cats tend to have (their brains are literally wired differently from boy cats') and who seek that intense bond they have with their chosen human! If you like what you read about Cat Power (CP) and would be interested in fostering or adopting, please text Emily at (585) 750-3994. Emily rescued her after her Person died but she is now fostering with a blackout drunk who avoids spending any time with her, so she's pining to love again - female cats are intensely loyal once they know they are safe, and they're very selective and incredibly devoted and loving once they choose you!

They're also not easy (as YouTube channel TheManiFamily says, "If your cat is a boy, you have no idea how tough life can be."), so please read on to make sure this is the kind of energy you dig. I'll tell you some generalizations about female cats and then corrolate that with how I've been told CP behaves (this is a courtesy listing - I have never met CP myself). She fits the profile astonishingly closely! She's "all girl", and grr with it sometimes.

First, female cats tend to be more vocal - not in a haranguing, yowly way but in a communicative way. They communicate with their person constantly, and that's CP. She loves when YOU talk to HER. Talk to her and she won't break eye contact with you, she'll watch you and chirp back. She has a chirpy, bird-like mew, and she'll come running across the room chirping to see what something is (especially water - she's obsessed with water and loves to lick it, bite it, bat it as it comes out of a faucet); she chirps when she looks out of the window or watches what you're watching on TV (I'm told that her person who died used to think this was hiLARious), but her favorite thing is to communicate with you, following you from room to room if necessary to continue the conversation (that's very Girl Cat too).

Secondly, it's VERY Girl Cat of her to respect your space. If you want a cat to hang out with you and be company beside you but not in your lap or in your face, a girl cat would suit you and Cat Power is like that. She's mentally very engaged with you, wants to know what you are doing (it's a female cat thing to be vigilant and want to know your routines...and to be more attentive when you're not feeling well), and wants your attention. She likes to look at you, kneading and purring (you can make her purr without touching her), sending you "You're making me happy" messages. If you prefer for your cat NOT to get right up in your space, that's a CP thing!

Thirdly, female cats tend to have a calmer, more mature energy, less destructive and loud and chaotic when they play. CP loves to play with you (wand toys bring out female cats' stalking instinct, because in the wild they are the stalkers and killers); playing with your female cat strengthens the bond between you and her (female cats tend to form tighter, more exclusive bonds with their humans). CP is prone to getting "big sillies" and to bringing toys to strew all around you and then showing you that she wants to play by throwing them around till you get the idea. When it comes to playing, girl cats are less likely to poke their heads into trouble, to test limits, explore in risky ways (like my cat who got himself caught in the heating vent - apparently that's a very boy thing), and they're more into safety and awareness. They are also generally easier to train and better at problem-solving!

That's a good thing about the training, because if you adopt CP you'll want to train her to redirect her energy because the fourth thing about female cats, and the thing you'll be okay with if you love them, is their moodiness. It's often called "like a switch that flips randomly" - one minute they're rubbing all over you, making you pet them (that's very CP - she loves to do figure eights around you, to rub all over you asking for attention, to rub all over your hand) and the next moment they're overstimulated and are biting you (that's CP too, and I think she'd welcome a person who cared enough to train her to put that sudden aggressiveness somewhere else!). If you've known a cat like that, it's a very Girl Cat thing!

Besides this moodiness, girl cats enjoy their alone time and can spend long hours alone; they are less social with other cats than males are and in the wild, feline society tends to be matriarchal, so girl cats tend to be bossy! Something to consider if your home already has a cat or dog in it - CP is very bossy and is a jerk to cats and dogs!

All in all, these things are what make me say that for people who are looking for the classic girl cat (and maybe also looking to adopt a senior, for as of 2026 she is going to be 10) and who have experience with that energy, she'd be great! Note that female cats are more cautious after a change (like being newly adopted) and she may need some time to bond with you. But then she'll be very affectionate and companionable!

p.s. I don't recommend dry food for any kitty's health, but if you really don't want to feed wet food, a female cat may be best for you because male cats (of any age) more easily develop life-threatening urinary tract issues when eating predominantly dry diets. Like - emergency vet issues!

Please text Emily at (585) 750-3994 to have a phone meeting with Cat Power - thanks so much for reading about her!
