Carter's Story

Carter (1.5 years old)

Carter is one of a kind, and he will require a very understanding and extremely patient owner; thus, he is a cat for more mature and experienced audiences, as it were. He is handsome and sports white on his chest and tummy as well as the tip of his tail. So far, Carter has shown a marked preference for the company of cats over people. However, a long time ago he learned that people are providers of food, and his attitude switched from one of fear to one of guarded interest. Indeed, Carter has grown rather stout and portly since his arrival in the shelter as a stray, and we have spoiled him with tidbits in our efforts to win him over. Still, Carter would prefer to be a feline a la Kipling’s “The Cat That Walked by Himself” and maintain a certain distance from people. He will grudgingly accept some pets while he is eating treats (from which wild horses couldn’t drag him away) or is in a room full of people during our open houses and can’t easily plot an escape route.

In many ways, Carter remains a bit wild and untamed, but he is also a gentle animal who just wants a quiet home to soothe him, access to a sunny windowsill where he can lounge and watch the world, and a person who will offer him treats and some entertainment: he loves to play with wand and feather toys, and fresh catnip is a special delight that will turn him into a tubby, wriggly, overgrown kitten. Carter would do best with an experienced owner who understands that he is not cuddly or inclined to snuggle (perhaps as years go by he might; who knows?), and he dearly needs his space. If he wants to invade your space, he will let you know, but he won’t be forced, wrangled, or rushed into closeness. Carter never met a cat he didn’t like, but we have no idea how he would do with dogs or kids. Since he prefers things to be calm, cozy, and peaceful, it might be best to let him enjoy the company of cats and people who will never crowd him.

Carter has come such a long way since he first came to the shelter. The patient adopter will regard Carter as a slowly unfolding work in progress and enjoy the years it will take for Carter to develop further and grow into a cat who is more at ease in the world. If you have time to spare, you might pay a few visits to Carter before you decide if he will fit into your life and vice versa.

OK with Dogs
: Unknown
OK with Cats
: Yes, he likes their company
OK with Kids
: Unknown
