Meet Captain Catnip! Aptly named, because there is nothing in the world he enjoys more (besides human companionship) than THE NIP! 🌿<br/><br/>Arrival: 2/23/26<br/>Estimated DOB: February 2023<br/><br/>Captain Catnip had been hanging around a Kentwood residence with another of our (former) Crash Cats, Anders, for about three months prior to intake. It seems the boys may have tangled a bit, as they both arrived with wounds in varying stages of healing on their left forepaws.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, Captain Catnip was also dealing with some medical challenges. He came in with severe bilateral ear infections caused by a trifecta of organisms: ear mites, two types of bacteria, and yeast. On top of that, he was flea-ridden and had internal parasites. Thankfully, his rescuer had taken great care of him and even managed to fatten him up to a healthy 14 pounds before he arrived!<br/>Speaking of his rescuer, we were over our headcount limit at the time, so we worked out a deal for her to foster him until space opened up - or until her two resident cats accepted him and he could officially join the family.<br/><br/>A few weeks into his sleepover, however, he became febrile and stopped eating. Full diagnostics were performed, which thankfully came back largely normal. With treatment consisting of steroids, antibiotics, fluids, and Vitamin B-12, he quickly bounced back. Within days he was back to his usual self—lounging in his own room at Feline Wellness Center, soaking up pets from anyone entering or leaving, and rolling blissfully in his fresh greens to his heart’s content.<br/><br/>We suspect the stress of transitioning from street life to a home with two resident cats was simply too much too soon. The introduction didn’t go smoothly, which likely triggered an underlying virus and caused his brief illness. After discussing things with his foster mom, we decided it would be best for him to remain in care a bit longer and later see how he interacted with the cats at Crash’s. Some kitties thrive as a small fish in a big pond—but when Captain Catnip experienced the reverse, he made a few waves that disrupted the household harmony. <br/><br/>Captain Catnip truly is the whole package.<br/>He’s as handsome as he is friendly. While he prefers humans over other cats, he has never shown aggression here. He absolutely ADORES being held, and while he’s very docile, he is not timid in the slightest. He loves birdwatching, belly rubs, and spending quality time with his people. <br/><br/>One thing to know about our Captain: he can be a bit of a door darter, so any home we consider for him must have a double-door entry system to keep him safe. Because of this, homes with very small children may not be the best fit.<br/>From what we’ve seen so far, Captain Catnip would THRIVE in a home where he is the only feline resident, if his humans can give him plenty of one-on-one love and attention, though we do feel he would be up to giving cohabitation another try. <br/><br/>He is incredibly easy to love and has quickly become a favorite among us at FWC, volunteers and visitors alike. 💚 I have to say—we haven’t seen a cat quite as chill and laid-back as Captain Catnip in quite some time… and that’s completely without the effects of the nip!
