Butternut Squash's Story

Introducing our Soup Litter! These very sweet kitties came to us from a loving family home after their kitty unexpectedly had a litter of kittens in mid-July. They grew up being handled regularly so they are very social and comfortable with people. They will climb all over you and purr up a storm. The kittens in this litter get along with each other very well and would be a good fit for anyone looking for a pair of littermates. They play a lot with each other but also enjoy toys and balls.

This beautiful kitten is Butternut Squash. He enjoys spending time with people and will roll over to let you pet his belly. Butternut loves to play but so enjoys napping and purring. He'll come on to your lap and cuddle in and purr when he's ready to rest, or he'll pick up a soft ball and entertain himself easily if you're not around.

All of these kittens will do best in a home with another cat, whether that's with a sibling or where there's an existing cat in the home. This litter has been in a foster home with older children and will be comfortable in an adoptive home with kids as long as they're respectful and handle the kittens appropriately. They have never met a dog but they are used to hearing the sounds of a dog in the home and could probably learn to live with a cat-savvy dog if introduced properly.

During his first veterinary checkup, Butternut was found to be healthy overall, although the vet did detect a mild heart murmur. Heart murmurs are relatively common in kittens and can sometimes be temporary, particularly when they’re very young or experiencing stress. Other factors, including previous parasitic infestations, can also contribute. When Butternut and his siblings first arrived in our care, they had flea infestations, which have since been treated. They had also experienced a big, stressful day with their first car ride and veterinary visit. Both parents were examined and did not have heart murmurs, which makes an inherited cause less likely. The kittens' hearts will be checked again at their next vet visit to see whether the murmur has resolved. Our vet does not currently suspect that it is a cause for concern, but it is still too early to know for certain whether it will disappear as they grow or persist into adulthood. We want to be open about the health, of our kittens, so their future family should be comfortable with the possibility that she may continue to have a heart murmur and that further veterinary assessment could be recommended if it persists.

If you'd like to learn more about Butternut or his siblings, please visit https://victoriapets.ca/adoption-process/ for information about our adoption process and to find a copy of our online adoption application.

Victoria Pet Adoption Society's Adoption Policy
Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment and a big responsibility. Dogs can live 15 years or more, and cats can live 20+ years. Like people, each individual pet comes with its own set of baggage, needs, and personality traits. Because your new pet will depend on you to provide its basic needs, we need to be sure that you are educated and up to the challenge. Our adoption process allows us to ask you some questions about your home environment, your lifestyle, and your needs, expectations, and limitations. We want to be sure that your new pet is going to be just as happy in its new home as you are to have it there. A Successful Adoption Process Includes the Following Steps: To start the adoption process, please complete the online adoption application found at https://victoriapets.ca/adoption-process/. If our adoption team feels as though your home will be a great fit for one of our pets they will contact you to set up a visit supervised by the foster parent who can answer some of the questions you may have about the animal of interest. You will not be able to take the pet home the day of the visit. One of our volunteers will contact you after the visit and will open a dialogue with you based on the information provided in your application. We will talk about your home and family, as well as your experience with pets. We will ask you to tell us about the kind of life and care you can offer to the adopted pet, and we will inform you about any health or behavioural issues that you should be aware of. (For dogs only) Once an adoption is pending, we will come visit your home to ensure that the environment is suitable for the pet in question, based on its needs. We can advise you of modifications that could make the adoption more successful, such as fencing and other things you may not have thought about. The adoption process generally takes several days, and this time line is intentional. It allows you time to think about your decision so that you can be sure that you are comfortable with the decision that you’ve made. Adoptions are never approved within 48 hours of the application being submitted. Once we have successfully journeyed through the steps above, you can pick up your new friend to begin a wonderful life together! Signing an adoption contract is a requirement for every pet that is adopted. Adoption Fees are as Follows: Kittens (up to 12 months of age) $400 Adult Cats (1 yr - 8yrs) $300 Senior Cats (9 yrs and older) $250 Special Needs Cats (other than kittens) $250 Puppies (up to 12 months of age) $600 Adult Dogs (1 yr - 8yrs) $400 Senior Dogs (9 yrs and older) $300 Special Needs dogs (other than puppies) $300 Rabbits $50 Guinea Pigs $30 Rats/hamsters $20 Mice $10 Adoption fees for other species may vary
