Beefsteak (FIV Positive)'s Story

Beefy wanted to remind everyone that he is still looking for his very own happily ever after. (And he thinks it would be super cool if you could spread the word too.)

This handsome hunk estimated to be 3-6 years old has come such a long way since he was found living outside with his kittens and fending for himself. Lucky for Beefy, he had set up camp behind a vet office in Carrboro, NC. His amazing rescuers and foster mom have been showing him that humans can be kind and have introduced him to the good life. He thinks the good life is awesome!

When Beefy was trapped in November, his body showed just how difficult life had been. Since then, he has made an incredible transformation. He is now healthy, neutered, vaccinated (FVRCP and rabies), free of dental pain, and has completed treatment for mycoplasma. He is also FIV positive. FIV+ cats can live long, happy, healthy lives and can safely live with FIV-negative cats as long as there is no serious fighting.

Most importantly… he is safe.

From the very beginning, his foster mom has worked patiently to show Beefy that people can be trusted. He is still shy, but with time, patience, and understanding, we truly believe he will continue to blossom.

Underneath that tough guy, grumpy-boy exterior is a silly sweetheart who enjoys toys and head scritches. In fact, Beefy only recently discovered toys and now he LOVES them. Watching him relax enough to simply play and enjoy life has been incredibly heartwarming.

Beefy has been introduced to female cats and seems to really enjoy their company. He has not been introduced to male cats aside from the kittens he lived with outdoors.

Beefy is looking for a calm, compassionate home where he can move at his own pace. Ideally, he would have a safe indoor room or space of his own at first so he can decompress and learn that his new life is safe. He will also need a home with at least one other cat who can help show him the ropes.

His foster mom has been using the Socialization Saves Lives method and strongly encourages adopters to continue using it. To help set him up for success, she is even willing to send his playpen and supplies with him to make the transition easier.

Beefy’s foster home has dogs, and while they are mostly kept separate, he doesn’t seem bothered one bit by the dogs that “bark a ton.” Respectful children who understand boundaries would also likely be fine.

Beefy may not be a “ready-made” lap cat, but for the right person, he could become an incredibly rewarding companion. If you believe in second chances and have room in your heart for a cat who just needs someone to believe in him, Beefy might just be your perfect match.

Learn more about the Socialization Saves Lives method here:

https://www.socializationsaveslives.com/guide

Learn more about FIV here:

https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv

Vintage Racers for Rescues will be screening applications on behalf of the veterinary clinic.
