Aspen's Story
Aspen's story is one of survival, resilience, and second chances. Approximately 10 years old, Aspen was rescued from a feral cat colony in October 2025 by one of WAAL's dedicated volunteers who spends countless hours trapping, feeding, and caring for Wichita's community cats. When Aspen was found, she was fighting for her life. Severe dental disease had left her teeth and gums so infected and painful that she had stopped eating. She was little more than skin and bones, and it was clear that without immediate intervention, she would not survive. Thanks to quick action and a lot of love, Aspen was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic where she began treatment right away. Within a week, she was receiving specialized care at the Cat Hospital of Wichita, one of WAAL's incredible community partners. Most of her teeth were removed, leaving her with just two tiny front teeth—one on the top and one on the bottom. And that's when Aspen's new life truly began. Since her surgery, Aspen has blossomed into a bright, curious, affectionate cat who seems determined to make up for lost time. She enjoys the simple pleasures in life: a cozy cat tree, a covered hideaway, a soft blanket, and a good meal. In fact, mealtime is one of her favorite activities. Her foster mom affectionately calls her "Pig Pen" because Aspen has a habit of scooping wet food out of her bowl and onto the floor before happily dining on it. She's a little messy, but that's part of her charm. Because of her limited teeth, Aspen will do best on a soft-food diet, though she can still nibble on kibble when she chooses. Prospective adopters should be prepared to provide her with the softer foods that help her thrive. Aspen is a gentle companion who enjoys being near her people. She likes to settle beside you and soak up your company, and with time and trust, she may very well become a devoted lap cat. She's even been known to be wrapped up in a blanket and rocked and sung to sleep by her foster mom—a privilege she accepts with quiet contentment. Having spent much of her life surrounded by other cats, Aspen coexists beautifully with feline companions. She knows how to politely set boundaries when another cat gets a little too close, but overall she is easygoing and comfortable sharing her space. One of Aspen's most endearing features is the slight bend in her neck, likely the result of an old injury from her years on the streets. Her head tilts gently down and to the right, giving her an unmistakable look that perfectly matches her unique personality. It doesn't slow her down or bother her in the slightest—in fact, it only adds to her special charm. Aspen has already overcome more than most cats ever should. Now she's looking for a family who will cherish her for exactly who she is: a survivor, a sweetheart, and a wonderfully quirky companion with plenty of love—and plenty of years—still left to give.
