Radagast's Story
In Tolkiens legendarium, Radagast the Brown is the wizard who chose the birds. While the other Istari concerned themselves with the great affairs of men and elves, Radagast turned his attention to feathered and furred things: the small lives, the overlooked ones, the creatures that the wider world tends to pass without seeing. He is not the most celebrated of wizards, but he is, arguably, among the most tenderhearted.

The pigeon found on the edge of a sidewalk, standing on feet so damaged by stringfoot that staying upright had become an act of endurance, shares the name and something of the spirit. Volunteers saw her, approached, and she recognized help when it finally arrived and allowed herself to be picked up without protest. She was ready. She had been waiting for this, maybe, for longer than anyone knew.

Her feet were treated and bandaged. Pain medication was administered. And then someone placed her on a cushion, and Radagast sank into it with the full-body relief of a creature whose pain had been, at last, addressed. She found a plush toy nearby, and she snuggled up against it, and that was that. The chapter of suffering was over. The chapter of cushions had begun.

She has been deeply grateful ever since, in specific way of a bird who knows the difference between before and after. Her preferred spot is the back of the armchair in the living room - elevated, comfortable, perfectly positioned to be part of whatever is happening. She is sweet with her foster family. She is polite in every interaction. She is, in the tradition of her namesake, a bird who asks for very little and receives care with the quiet grace of someone who understands its value.

Tolkiens Radagast was said to have a particular gift with birds - they trusted him, came to him, carried messages for him across great distances. This Radagast inspires a similar response in the people around her: you want to take care of her. You want to make sure shes comfortable. You want to check that the cushion is soft enough and the plush toy is nearby. She has earned a home that feels this way about her permanently.
