Mildred & Milton (married couple)'s Story

Mildred’s rescue strategy was direct, effective, and very on-brand for who she turned out to be: she landed on people’s heads at a playground until someone did something about it. She had been released outdoors by whoever raised her, equipped with zero survival skills and an apparently unshakeable confidence in the goodwill of strangers. She was not wrong. Mildred arrived in foster care having successfully advocated for her own rescue through the simple act of being impossible to ignore. She has continued in this tradition ever since!

Milton came from a harder place. Found on the city streets with stringfoot severe enough to cost him most of his toes, he had been out there managing on his own for longer than anyone should have to. And having made it through, he appears to have made a considered philosophical decision: he is done with hardship, and he is fully committed to its opposite. Milton’s current interests are napping on soft cushions and building elaborate, colorful nests out of pipe cleaners. His ambitions are soft and warm. He has earned every bit of this, and he knows it!

Mildred does occasionally convince Milton to explore their foster home with her, which represents a significant concession on his part and a real testament to how much he loves her. Together, they need a home with room for Mildred’s curiosity and Milton’s cushions — which is to say, a home where someone is around to be investigated by one bird and napped alongside by another. They are not high-maintenance, they are simply a complete ecosystem: all the vivacity and all the peace, in one perfect married pair of pigeons!
