Houdini's Story

Houdini is a wild caught male Goffins cockatoo, so his age unknown. But he is likely 34+ years old, as it was illegal to import birds after 1992. He loves to fly and is very good at it. It's a must that he keep this important skill for his mental and physical health. All birds deserve a chance to fly when possible, but the wild caught parrots are definitely entitled to this part of their nature!

Houdini probably acquired his name from being smart, as cockatoos can be. You thought African greys were the smartest? We're not so sure about that! Cockatoos are strategic thinkers, tool-makers, and extraordinary deconstructors! Lots of wood and shreddable toys a must, maybe you would like to create some challenging new possibilities for Houdini? A foraging table and lots of things hanging from the ceiling might keep him busy for awhile :-)

He likes to be around other cockatoos, another male would be best to prevent any chick-making ideas. Cockatoos seem to do best when around others, it helps to minimize dysfunctional screaming. Houdini says "no human hands, please, just appreciate my charm."

Houdini has spent lots of time in an outdoor aviary at The Landing, enjoying fresh air and sunshine. He is a terrific eater of fresh foods, and has been in all around great health! He should have many more decades ahead, which probably means a few more homes in his hopeful long life. The term "forever home" does not apply to birds that potentially live for many decades, which means adoption is a positive way to think about bringing parrots into our families!!

IMPORTANT PROCESS INFORMATION: Before we can discuss a specific bird with you, we ask that you follow our adoption and education process. Some birds are in foster homes that may adopt them, but there are many other birds waiting for our help who are not yet posted in PetFinders. The adoption coordinator in your area will work with you to find the best home for each bird, and a species and personality that works best for your family. We want to set everyone up for success, especially our parrots!

To get started, the adoption process includes completing our parrot match application and attending one of our core classes. You can find information about this process on our website at www.phoenixlanding.org/adopt

ONLY AREAS OF OPERATION: Phoenix Landing serves only Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and northeast Florida. We do not ship birds. However, everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us for our online events. Parrots are unique and they deserve us to be informed caretakers. There are also many past event recordings available which you may find helpful. All event information can be found at www.phoenixlanding.org/events

Phoenix Landing Foundation's Adoption Policy
Understanding the attributes of various parrot species is important. It is also essential to make sure that the personal connection between each individual parrot and the adopting family is just right. We want our families and birds to succeed for many years. The first step is to send an application, begin talking with us, and attend our educational seminars. Our goal is to help each parrot find stability and the best possible place to call home. We want to set you and a bird up for success, this is why in most cases we prefer to do a home visit. This usually happens after you join us for a class, and before a bird is placed.
