Falafel's Story

Falafel arrived with one of the worst cases of stringfoot our rescue has ever seen. Hair, thread, and street debris had wound around both feet so tightly that his legs were bound together and he could no longer stand.

Stringfoot is a quiet, common disaster for city pigeons. They forage in gutters and doorways, and human hair, fishing line, and thread snarl around their toes. The material tightens with every step. Circulation stops. Left alone, birds lose toes or whole feet.

Falafel lost nearly all of his. He has one toe remaining on each foot.

His recovery took months, most of it spent in bandages — small wraps that gave him the look of a bird in custom miniature tennis shoes. He wore them without protest. He walks again now! He can fly, too, when he judges the occasion worthy, which is rarely, because Falafel has looked at his second life and decided it will be a life of rest.

He has a favorite spot in his foster home and a big fluffy cushion he sleeps on every night, and he treats both as a full-time occupation. He's a blue bar, that classic slate-and-charcoal build with two black wing bars and coral-pink legs, and he wears his patterned pigeon pants like a pro - a bird who has made peace with laundry day. He loves his treats. He loves his plush toy. He loves, above all, a nap.

His feet mean his world should stay soft. Flat cushions, blankets, ground-level food and water, nothing high enough that a bad landing could hurt him. He's happiest with cushioned footing under him at all times, which happens to be exactly where he wants to be anyway.

Falafel spent the worst months of his life wrapped in the wrong things. He'd like to spend the rest of it wrapped in a blanket, in your house, asleep.
