Cupcake's Story
Before you get the name, you should have the reason for it. Cupcake was rescued with stringfoot so severe it broke him: hair and thread and city debris had wound around one foot and leg, tightening over time until the circulation went and the bone fractured in several places. Stringfoot is one of the most common injuries city pigeons come to us with, and one of the least visible. It happens quietly, a little at a time.

His first night in rescue, Barbara tucked him in with fresh food, fresh water, and nothing else asked of him. He fell asleep in the food dish. Not beside it. In it, spilling over the rim in a soft heap, like frosting on a cup that couldn't fully hold him. Cupcake.

He's stayed exactly that bird. He doesn't complain, doesn't push, doesn't make a project of anyone's day. He takes his cushions and his treats with the grateful air of someone who knows what the alternative looks like.

He is charming to look at: dark checkered wings scattered with pale flecks, a throat that turns green and violet when he catches the light, coral-red feet, and pigeon pants in a print he did not choose but wears extremely well. That foot will never work fully again, but it doesn't need to. Cupcake is happiest on soft, flat surfaces, and the couch within easy reach. He's already learned how to rest. He is just waiting for his forever home where he can finally fully relax in maximum floof mode.
