BASIL's Story

MEET BASIL! Basil is a suspected 1 year old male parakeet. Parakeets are an ideal first pet for those looking to try bird keeping, they are beautiful, and quite entertaining with their bird whistles and chirps. Parakeets love attention and enjoy daily interaction. Although they have an independent nature, they form important bonds with their pet parents, so if you get a parakeet, you'll want to foster your relationship by interacting with your pet bird. Parakeets are active birds that enjoy a variety of activities in their habitat to keep them occupied-including toys such as ladders, swings, rings and balls, as well as foraging toys for mental stimulation. Rotating toys on a regular basis will help alleviate boredom. Parakeets are social creatures with an innate need for companionship. Even if you've developed a strong bond with your pet bird, it's impossible to spend every waking moment interacting with him. The parakeet's independent nature can prove beneficial during brief times of separation, but a companion parakeet might be a positive addition to your pet's life. Parakeets that are kept together in a habitat form strong bonds and are less likely to be bored. As an herbivore, a parakeet's diet revolves around whole grains, seeds and fresh fruits and vegetables. The foundation of this diet is typically a fortified pelleted food that is specifically formulated for parakeets and includes a range of vitamins and minerals. A parakeet diet should be comprised of 80 percent pelleted food, supplemented with 10 percent treats, in the form of fruits, vegetables and seeds. Never feed your bird avocados, fruit seeds, chocolate, caffeine or alcohol. Continuous access to fresh, clean water also is essential. *A photo of the cage setup is required prior to adoption. Basil has been seen by our vet team!
