Alexander's Story

Alexander is a sexually mature male Moluccan cockatoo. We don't know his exact age because he came to us from a Virginia shelter. He is a very active guy, and that's a good thing for physical and mental health. Cockatoos, especially Moluccans, are already loud; but a bored cockatoo can develop very dysfunctional screaming. So it's really important that we keep them busy with lots of "places to go and things to do." This means the widest cage possible (48" wide MINIMUM) packed with a diversity of perches and activities. And because cockatoos are very social, as much out-of-cage time as possible is also very important.

Hanging things from the ceiling is one way to give them safe places to go. Cockatoos do tend to go to the ground naturally, so we have to be sure we have a safe environment for that.

Alexander came to us with feather destructive behavior on his chest, as you can see in his photos. But since he has been a voracious eater of a wide diversity of fresh foods, and is now active with many toys and foraging, it is possible he may regrow some of his chest feathers someday. But even if he never grows them back, as is the case with many captive parrots, he is very loveable as is! Also like many birds, he is on Isoxsuprine heart medication because his past life was probably too sedentary. We're not sure yet if this is temporary or permanent.

Alexander is a very big talker, and quite charming in many ways (although he does have some words we do not respond to). And don't forget - cockatoos are naturally loud! We don't recommend a lot of touching, especially with the boys. Best not to get them riled up, this is when they can be less predictable. Understanding body language is a must.

IMPORTANT PROCESS INFORMATION: Before we can discuss a specific bird with you, we ask that you follow our adoption process. Some birds are in foster homes that may adopt them, many other birds are waiting for our help and are not yet posted in PetFinders. The adoption coordinator in your area will work with you to find the best home for each bird, and a species and personality that works best for your family too. We want to set everyone up for success, especially our parrots.

To get started, the adoption process includes completing our parrot match application and attending one of our core classes. You can find information about this process on our website at www.phoenixlanding.org/adopt

ONLY AREAS OF OPERATION: Phoenix Landing serves only Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and northeast Florida. We do not ship birds. However, everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us for our online events. Parrots are unique and they deserve us to be informed caretakers. There are also many past event recordings available which you may find helpful. All event information can be found at www.phoenixlanding.org/events

Thanks for helping parrots!

Phoenix Landing Foundation's Adoption Policy
Understanding the attributes of various parrot species is important. It is also essential to make sure that the personal connection between each individual parrot and the adopting family is just right. We want our families and birds to succeed for many years. The first step is to send an application, begin talking with us, and attend our educational seminars. Our goal is to help each parrot find stability and the best possible place to call home. We want to set you and a bird up for success, this is why in most cases we prefer to do a home visit. This usually happens after you join us for a class, and before a bird is placed.
