Zumbrota's Story
Our adoption process can be found on our website here: www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/process

Estimated birth date: 1/29/2024

Personality: Aggressive (lunges, bites, etc), Curious, Energetic, Inquisitive, Smart

Favorite treats: Dried mealworms, Furo-vite malt paste

Current Diet: Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat Food

Favorite toys and activities: Foraging, running on the wheel, burrowing in deep substrate/dig box, gathering and arranging nesting material

Potty trained: Rats prefer to pick a spot to potty, but still scent mark with urine as they move around their space. I provide litter trays instead of levels in the cage, and they pick a favorite spot, where I can then change their litter regularly.

NOTE: Rats, even when litter trained, use their urine to scent mark as they move around their space. This means that while they might not take a big pee when they’re free roaming, they’re still trailing tiny dribbles wherever they go to help them navigate and understand their space. Most people can’t smell these tiny amounts of urine, but some people’s noses are more sensitive than others, so make sure your space can be cleaned easily if needed!

This animal’s daily routine: I scatter feed half the group’s daily food in the cage in the mornings, free roam for an hour or so in the evening, with a bit of food scattered in the room for foraging, and then the rest scattered in the cage again after so they go inside for dinner.

BFF: Elma and Zumbrota are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

Other species this pet has been exposed to and reaction: She has been in a cat household with no contact with the cats. She is accustomed to the cat hair and scent on me when I am with her. She does not display anxiety from smelling the cats.

Has this animal been exposed to children? What was their reaction? She has not been exposed to children. She is unpredictably aggressive towards humans, and would not be safe around children.

Health concerns: No current health concerns. In an attempt to reduce her aggressive biting, she has been spayed.

Behavioral concerns: Zumbrota is an aggressive rat. Her aggression is not fear based, and not different in vs out of her cage. She is very gentle when taking food, and licks furo-vite or yogurt or baby food nicely off a finger with no attempts to bite it. She likes to climb on and around me during free roam, and to groom the hair at the back of my neck. She also will, with little warning (but usually when there is any movement in her area of reach that she didn’t initiate) lunge and bite hard for the purpose of injuring. This is different than a nip. She does that too, sometimes mixed in with grooming my hands or when she’s sitting next to my leg. She has been spayed for hormonal aggression, and this is, in fact, mellower than she used to be. She is a rat that can be very sweet (not to mention squishy and adorable) but requires constant vigilance and a lot of patience, as well as the understanding that you will be bitten, even if you are experienced with rats.. Due to this, we suggest she be adopted by a family with rat experience. Learn more about our trust training methods at https://www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/trust-training

Other notes from Zumbrota's foster: Zumbrota is a rat that should only be handled by an experienced rat owner. She is best moved about by offering her the carrier and letting her get in it to go where she needs to go, so you aren’t risking your hands and she doesn’t feel trapped. If she doesn’t go in on her own right away, she is highly food motivated and can be bribed with some kibble placed inside.

This is not a beginner rat! She needs a home with someone who is experienced in rat care and can read rat body language very well. I’m an experienced rat parent, and she still manages to catch me off my guard and get a bite in with some regularity.

All came to MNPPR as transfers from another rescue.

Due to our rescue being foster-based, not all foster homes are located in Saint Paul, MN. This animal's foster parent prefers to meet at the Petsmart - 1640 New Brighton Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55413 for meet & greets, & adoptions.

Fee: Elma & Zumbrota have a combined adoption fee of $41.25

We absolutely DO NOT SHIP ANIMALS! Please do not ask.

Zumbrota's care while in rescue has not yet been sponsored.
