Standard grey male chinchilla "Smokey"<br/>Born approx. 3/2023 -- 2.5 years old<br/><br/>Smokey is a 2.5 year old standard grey male. He is a furchewer, and you may notice, his right eye has some damage. He is one of those chins that *loves* to hide.<br/><br/>So much so, that when he got an eye infection, we think it took us a couple days to notice, because he doesn't like to come out of his house / tube / hides, and we don't make the anti-social chins come out daily if they don't want to (should we? I mean I suppose that's up for debate. I can't think of the last time this sort of thing happened The second we noticed there was a problem, he was immediately started on eye drops / antibiotics, and his eye cleared up on less than a week. However he now appears to have some scarring / damage to his eye. Will this clear up over time? Maybe? We're not sure. He's still got one "good eye" and he gets around fine.<br/><br/>He also is still sort-of-healing (well, healed-ish) from a paw injury. How he injured his paw? We don't know that either. Our rescue cages are far-enough away from other cages that they can't reach their neighbors, so your guess is as good as mine. Let's just assume this is an accident-prone chin, because they really are out there. That injury was treated immediately (this was prior to the eye and he is now missing two fingers on his left paw (he's always giving you that heavy metal / rock music sign with the index finger and ring finger up The injury is all healed, though he does occasionally hold up this paw in the air at times.<br/><br/>...and I mentioned he's a furchewer, right? So this guy is sort of a basket-case.<br/><br/>He originally came from a pet store in Las Vegas, and came here when his young owner had to move in with her grandma (here in Indiana) who didn't have room for a chinchilla and it's cage.<br/><br/>He isn't a fan of being picked up, and I'm positive that all the meds / treatments that he's been on has not helped that *one bit He will get in one of his hides or a corner and posture and bark and act suuuper tough. He's never bitten or anything, he just acts like he's going to, and let's be honest, for most people, that's enough to keep them away.<br/><br/>If you can get past the posturing and intimidation techniques and can pick him up, he does alright with handling and petting. He does move around a bit when being held and he will check things out while in your arms. Which is kind of interesting, as in his cage he'd rather find a hiding spot and sit there forever, rather than check out anything new (he's very very cautious He does settle down in your arms after a bit of handing and he is a sweet boy. When being handled, he prefers a looser grip and *really* doesn't like being restrained (like for meds and that sort of thing Very wiggle-worm if you need to give meds.<br/><br/>This is not a chin I would try playtime with, as I anticipate he would find a *really really good hiding spot* and never come out. Like behind the fridge or under the couch. He would love a cage with umpteen hiding spots and very low expectations.<br/><br/>He should go to a home with teenagers and up.
