Pedro (bonded to Sarsaparilla)'s Story

Meet Pedro & Sarsaparilla

AGE AT ARRIVAL: Approximately 3 years old
ARRIVAL DATE: October 6th, 2025 | November 25th, 2025
GENDER: Pedro-Neutered Male | Sarsaparilla-female
ADOPTION FEE: $125 for the pair
NOTES:
Pedro and Pascal were surrendered to Hamilton Animal Services when their owner could no longer give them the care they needed. We were happy to get these cute boys out of the shelter when a foster home became available.
At their vet visit on their rescue day, these two guys were scrapping so much that staff had to separate them. We weren’t sure if it was the stress of everything happening to them, or if they really just didn’t like each other but the fighting got so intense, separating them was the only option. When they got to their foster home, they were kept in separate enclosures right next to each other so they could still interact without harm. Their foster family took all the right steps to try to re-bond Pedro and Pascal over the next few weeks, but to no avail. These two pigs were just not having it. So, the decision was made to permanently separate them and have them neutered.
A month later, we rescued two single female guinea pigs, Sarsaparilla and Sassafras. Attempts to bond these two girls to each other did not work, so we did some swapping between foster homes to see if Pedro would bond to Sarsaparilla and Pascal would bond to Sassafras.
After a couple of weeks of slow and patient bonding sessions, Pedro and Sarsaparilla are now best friends! We’re happy to finally be able to make this adorable couple available for adoption.

Here’s what Pedro and Sarsaparilla’s foster mom has to say about them:
“Pedro and Sarsaparilla are the cutest pair. They have very different personalities, but they balance each other out nicely. Pedro is outgoing and Sarsaparilla is very shy, but her confidence has increased since living with Pedro full time. Because Sarsaparilla is still very nervous around humans, we wouldn’t recommend them for a home with small children.
The pigs are living in a 6×2 C&C enclosure, and they love having all that space. Their enclosure in their new home should have at least that amount of space or more to keep them happy. Pedro can be very demanding when it comes to treat and veggie time. He will stand on his hind legs at the side of the enclosure and rattle the bars with his teeth until you hand over the goods. Sarsaparilla will wait in the wings until the treats are in the enclosure before she makes her way over to join Pedro to eat. Romaine lettuce, dandelion leaves, and parsley are their favourites. They get an Oxbow Vitamin C cookie daily. Pedro will take the treat from your hand, and Sarsaparilla is *very* close to being comfortable enough to take the treat from your hand, but she’s not quite there yet. We will keep working on that.
They love their hay piles and will dive in and wheek for joy when a fresh mound of hay is delivered. They’ll be lovely companions for a person or family who can be patient with Sarsaparilla’s shy nature, and who will give them the spoiled life they deserve.”

Please adopt Pedro and Sarsaparilla!
❤️
Visit our website to apply:
ladybirdanimalsanctuary.com
