Mr Kelly's Story

Mr Kelly is a 5 month old long haired male Syrian hamster. We were contacted about him initially in February by a pet store employee who noticed Mr Kelly had a particularly short snout and was missing his upper incisors.

We took in Mr Kelly and upon inspection determined that he has a genetic deformity known as brachycephaly. Our vet confirmed this diagnosis.

Mr Kelly is a bit shy but he is fine being handled and held. He will accept treats from your hand. Sometimes he doesn’t feel like being social so he will hide out in his house and take a nap. But he enjoys running in his wheel and digging in his sand box.

Due to Mr Kelly not having upper incisors, he does require a soft food diet. He does get seed mix and can eat some of it, but needs the extra calories and protein of a soft blend that is easier for him to eat. At this time, Mr Kelly does not require tooth trims for his bottom teeth, but they do need inspections every few weeks to make sure they haven’t grown too long.

Potential adopters will need to be willing to mix up fresh food for Mr Kelly weekly. You will also need to be willing and financially able to afford tooth trims in case his teeth start to require help. We would prefer Mr Kelly go to an experienced hamster owner but would consider a beginner owner if we feel they are dedicated to Mr Kelly’s well being.
