Mary & Her Mary-acles's Story

Meet Mother Mary and The Eight (Yes, Eight) Mini Miracles!! (case #9462)

In a development that scientists are calling “a lot of rats,” our beloved Mother Mary has blessed us with a miraculous brood of eight identical babies. Yes. Eight. If you’re thinking octuplets, you are correct. If you’re thinking how does she tell them apart?, so are we.

The babies are 6 weeks old and will soon be ready to head to their forever homes. They can be adopted as pairs, trios, or singly to homes that already have a rat friend waiting to welcome them into the mischief (yes, a group of rats is actually called a mischief - nature knew).

Despite looking like tiny photocopies of one another, Mother Mary insists she knows exactly who is who. Sometimes when she looks at them all running around, she seems to sigh softly, as if whispering: “Mother Mary comes to me…” and then immediately turning around to find someone chewing the hammock again. The personalities of the babies are currently potatoes with legs, but developing into professional snack inspectors. There is a mix of males and females.

If you’ve never had rats before, prepare to be shocked by how wonderful they are. Rats thrive with companions and bond strongly with their humans. They’ll greet you, climb on you, and sometimes groom you like a weird hairless rat. They can learn tricks, recognize their names, solve puzzles, and absolutely figure out where you hide the snacks. Many rats love shoulder rides, hoodie pockets, and dramatic flopping naps in your hand. Expect zoomies, acrobatics, tiny wrestling matches, and the occasional moment where they stare into space like philosophers.

Because rats are social animals, babies will be adopted in pairs, in trios or singly only to homes with an existing rat friend. Mother Mary herself is currently focusing on self-care, snacks, and processing the fact that she made eight identical children, but she is also available for adoption, preferable with a daughter (think Gwyneth and Apple in a Gap ad). If you’re ready for a tiny, hilarious, affectionate companion (or two…or three…), one of Mary’s little miracles might be perfect for you.

Apply to adopt and come meet the Mary-acles. Yes, we’re calling them that. Mary didn’t approve either. Please complete an adoption application:

https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions

Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only. This allows our Adoption Staff to spend quality time with each potential home to ensure the most successful matches are made between the animals and their new families.

*Please note: we only adopt within Ontario
