John Rat Rat Saint Paul, MN

Due to health and safety concerns, we are now pursuing adoptions with additional safety measures in place. We will be asking potential adopters to discuss their individual preferences and comfort levels involving safety precautions during the greeting/adoption day step. We are HIGHLY suggesting all participants wear facial coverings, stay at least six feet apart, & use sanitization of all surfaces, and hands before and after contact.

Estimated birth date: 6/25/2020

Personality: Very shy (you are unable to touch this animal without it running away or being fearful, etc), Inquisitive, Playful, Energetic, Nervous, Confrontational - When you do not announce yourself correctly he will bite firmly.

Favorite treats: Uncooked pasta, popcorn

Favorite toys and activities: Hammocks, Brother Snuggle Piles & Puzzle Boxes

Potty trained: No

This animal daily routine: Routine is pretty flexible with these rats, they do anticipate treats and head scratches in the evening as well as individual pouch cuddles with their foster to work on ease of handling.

BFF (Does this animal have or need a same species friend in their home?): Yes! John is bonded to Schmidt.

Other species this pet has been exposed to and reaction: They can see dogs, cats, & a gerbil from their living space but have not had any face to face contact.

Health concerns: John has very low vision and does sway back and forth to assess his surroundings. He should always be spoken to before he is touched.

Behavioral concerns: John is in our trust training program for biting when approached by hands primarily when unannounced. This confrontational biting is mostly due to his low vision but we hope to find techniques that work to alert him that touch is expected. Other notes: These rats are still getting used to handling, so a calm, patient approach is needed. They love hammocks, stacking chew toys in their food bowls, cuddling with each other, and any snack you are willing to share.

John & Schmidt made their way to MNPPR as a transfer all the way from TN where they were a part of a hoarding case.

Due to our rescue being foster-based, not all foster homes are located in Saint Paul, MN. John’s foster parent prefers to meet at the PetSmart location in Rochester, MN - 3845 Marketplace Dr NW, Rochester, MN 55901 & 4603 Maine Ave SE #109, Rochester, MN 55904 for meet & greets, & adoptions.
