Ilya's Story

About Shane & Ilya
Shane and Ilya are a bonded pair of male guinea pigs with gentle, thoughtful personalities. Guinea pigs are social, curious animals known for their expressive sounds, love of routine, and enjoyment of fresh foods. They thrive in calm, predictable homes where they can feel safe and build trust with their people.
Shane and Ilya are a bit on the shy side at first, which is very common for guinea pigs. With time, patience, and consistency, they begin to open up—especially when veggies and fresh hay are involved! During their time with us, they’ve shown sweet, quiet curiosity and a strong bond with each other. While we don’t have full details about their past, they’ve done well together and clearly take comfort in being a pair.

Handling & Support
Shane and Ilya will benefit from gentle, calm handling and moving at their pace. Guinea pigs are prey animals, so they can be cautious about being picked up. Using low-stress handling—such as supporting their bodies fully, speaking softly, and offering favorite treats—helps build confidence and trust over time.
They’ll do best with family members who understand that bonding takes patience and that letting them come to you is key. Consistent routines, rewards like fresh veggies, and respectful interaction will help them feel secure in their new home.

Ideal Home
Shane and Ilya would do best in a quiet, loving home where they can remain together. They require a large enclosure with plenty of space to explore, as well as enrichment such as hideaways, tunnels, chew toys, and regular floor time. Unlimited hay, daily fresh vegetables, and clean bedding are essential to keeping them happy and healthy.
With the right setup, gentle care, and time to settle in, Shane and Ilya will prove that even the most intense beginnings can lead to a winning partnership. All they need now is a forever home ready to welcome them to the team.

If you're interested in adopting Shane and Ilya, please enquire via this website, or email us directly at:

animal.shelter@vancouver.ca
