Elma's Story
Our adoption process can be found on our website here: www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/process

Estimated birth date: 01/29/2024

Personality: Brave, Curious, Energetic, Inquisitive, Mouthy (puts mouth on you but does not bite down, usually thinking your fingers are food), Playful, Dominant.

Favorite treats: Dried mealworms, Furo-vite malt paste

Current Diet: Oxbow Essentials Adult Rat Food.

Favorite toys and activities: Wrestling, foraging, running on the wheel, gathering, and arranging nesting material

Potty trained: Rats prefer to pick a spot to potty, but still scent mark with urine as they move around their space. I provide litter trays instead of levels in the cage, and they pick a favorite spot, where I can then change their litter regularly.

NOTE: Rats, even when litter trained, use their urine to scent mark as they move around their space. This means that while they might not take a big pee when they’re free roaming, they’re still trailing tiny dribbles wherever they go to help them navigate and understand their space. Most people can’t smell these tiny amounts of urine, but some people’s noses are more sensitive than others, so make sure your space can be cleaned easily if needed!

This animal’s daily routine: I scatter feed half the group’s daily food in the cage in the mornings, free roam for an hour or so in the evening, with a bit of food scattered in the room for foraging, and then the rest scattered in the cage again, so they go inside for dinner.

BFF: Elma and Zumbrota are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

Other species this pet has been exposed to and reaction: She has been in a cat household with no contact with the cats. She is accustomed to the cat hair and scent on me when I am with her. She does not display anxiety from smelling the cats.

Has this animal been exposed to children? What was their reaction? She has not been exposed to children. She occasionally bites and would not be an ideal pet around children.

Health concerns: Elma has a chronic sneeze as a result of untreated respiratory infections before she came into rescue. She has not displayed any other symptoms, but could be more prone to respiratory infection.

Behavioral concerns: Elma is a curious and outgoing little lady but she has a tendency to nip somewhat unexpectedly. I still haven’t determined a trigger, but usually it’s when she’s been interacting closely and decides she’s done. Due to this, we suggest she be adopted by a family with rat experience. Learn more about our trust training methods at https://www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/trust-training

Other notes from the foster: "Elma is an absolute sweetheart about 90% of the time, and a tiny adorable menace the other 10%. She’s about half the size of her largest cage mate but absolutely the queen bee of the bunch! She sometimes decides that the girls need reminding, and while she isn’t aggressive, she is definitely dominant. She will chase and sniff and pin and groom her friends, especially during free roam, and you’ll likely hear her making a racket if anyone tries to do the same to her! No one gets hurt though, even if there is some puffy fur and crying!
As far as her bite history goes, I’d recommend keeping a close eye on her if she’s near places on your body that sweat or smell. And wear closed toes shoes during free roam! Toes are apparently too tempting."

Elma and Zumbrota came to MNPPR from another rescue.

Due to our rescue being foster-based, not all foster homes are located in Saint Paul, MN. This animal's foster parent prefers to meet at the Petsmart - 1640 New Brighton Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55413 for meet & greets, & adoptions.

Fee: Elma & Zumbrota have a combined adoption fee of $41.25

We absolutely DO NOT SHIP ANIMALS! Please do not ask.

Elma's care while in rescue has not yet been sponsored. If you would like to donate to provide veterinary care, food, bedding, and enrichment for Elma or other pocket pets in the care of MNPPR, please visit https://www.mnpocketpetrescue.org/sponsor-a-pocket-pet for more information.
