Crouton, Cheesecake & Miso's Story
Fostered in Concord, NH.

***Experienced Owner***
***Medical Needs***

Crouton is a senior & is spayed

Crouton & Cheesecake are special needs due to medical issues. Crouton will need to be monitored for tumors and Cheesecake will need to be monitored for respiratory issues and probably require medication for life.

UPDATE 3/16/26:

These girls are some of the friendliest, easily handled rats I’ve had the pleasure of fostering! If you ever wished that you could have female rats that had lazy, cuddly moments like older male rats, these are the girls!

Crouton turned two years old on 3/1 and is the senior lady of the bunch, but you would not know it by her abundant energy! She loves to explore, climb and even jump during free roam. She has not yet met a food she hasn’t loved.

When Crouton came to us, she had a large internal mass that turned out to be an ovarian tumor. During surgery on 12/23, she had the ovarian tumor and a small mammary tumor removed and was spayed. On 3/3, Crouton had a second surgery to remove an additional mammary tumor. Crouton will need to be closely monitored to check for any additional growing lumps. Luckily, she gladly accepts the belly rubs and attention!

Cheesecake is a quirky little peanut (topping out at 260 grams) who is the most timid of the group but is still quite friendly and easily handled. She absolutely adores her sisters and will constantly chase them around during free room to try and groom them. She loves to get full body rubs while resting in her hammock and will brux and boggle hard to show her appreciation.

When Cheesecake came to us, she was somewhat lethargic and appeared to have difficulty breathing. After a vet visit and chest x-ray, she was diagnosed with pneumonia in her lower lungs and inflamed bronchi. After 10 weeks of antibiotics combined with prednisone, her pneumonia cleared up, but her labored breathing remained. While trying to wean her off the prednisone, her breathing seemed to worsen and her appetite and activity level were low, so it was decided to continue her prednisone indefinitely. She continues to take a small dose (0.05ml) every 48 hrs. and she seems to be keeping a good activity level and healthy appetite on that dosage. Her vet believes that she may have some lung scarring from previous URI’s and it is likely that she will need to continue on the steroid for the rest of her life.

Miso is a very confident girl and absolutely adores her humans! She is also quite the foodie and she will seek out her human during free roam to get side massages and cheek rubs. She has been a model of health so far (knock on wood).

These girls will need an experienced owner who can monitor Cheesecake’s respiratory issues and monitor Crouton for lumps, but they will reward said owner with ratty love and affection. They are truly special! Make sure to check out the link below for lots of additional photos and videos of their shenanigans!
