Bugs & Doc's Story

Doc is a fluffy mostly white calico Abyssinian, he’s social and will greet and talk to you and eat from your hand if it’s his favorite green bell peppers! He will run a bit when you go to pick him up but he does like being held, having his forehead pet and being talked to. He’s a lovely sweet guy and is always either out and about grazing, snuggling Bugs in a hide, or coming to the edge of the pen to say hello and maybe even get some pets if he’s in the mood for it. Doc gets extra excited after their morning pen cleanings and will give some really great popcorns to show it! Bugs is a slightly less fluffy mostly brown calico American, he is a shy boy and loves his hides and cozy nooks and corners where he can observe from a distance or snuggle with Doc. He has not eaten from our hand yet but we keep trying. He is skittish and will run when picking him up or putting him down but he really loves being held and cuddled gently once you have him. He’s a sensitive lovely boy and is very quiet unless he’s having a chat with Doc. During floor time Bugs seems to be willing to explore more than in their pen and he likes to try all the hides and treats hidden around for them, Doc will lead the charge at times and Bugs will follow behind while they explore. Bugs has come out of his shell little by little and we think he will become even more comfortable over time with a continued steady routine and lots of gentle care! Doc has some dental issues that may require more frequent vet visits and dental work. These guys are suggested for experienced adopters only. The boys are currently fostered in central Austin.

Austin Guinea Pig Rescue's Adoption Policy

Please answer the following questions before deciding on your potential guinea pigs. We try to ensure the best possible match between animals and adopter. Remember that this is a lifetime commitment. You will be asked to sign a legal contract when adopting any of our guinea pigs and you must pay an adoption fee. The fees go directly to AGPR to help pay for upkeep and medical care. Keep in mind the following points: The adopter must be within driving distance of Austin, Texas. We do not ship guinea pigs. Guinea pigs must be housed indoors. An onsite visit may be required. Guinea pigs can live up to 7-9 years. We are looking for those special adopters who will make every effort possible to keep their guinea pigs for their entire life despite life style changes (divorce, moving, etc.). Guinea pigs may not be adopted as gifts. All members of a household should visit the prospective animal. We do not adopt guinea pigs to children. We do adopt to families. An adult must sign the adoption contract. Please do not have your children call or email. Applicants under 18 years of age must have a parent or legal guardian apply on their behalf. Please understand that the guinea pigs available for adoption are all housed in foster homes. We do not have a shelter facility. We rely on the kindness of volunteers to care for and socialize our foster animals. Sometimes, if guinea pigs have been fostered for a long period of time, a strong bond forms between the foster parent and the guinea pigs. The foster parent has the final determination in whether or not the guinea pigs will be relinquished into your custody. Cancellation policy: We understand that sometimes emergencies happen, or you change your mind. We ask that you give us at least 24 hours' notice if you do not intend to keep your appointment. Cancellations of less than 24 hours are subject to a cancellation fee to compensate the volunteer for time spent getting ready for your visit. We try to reply to all applications within 48-72 hours. If you have not received a phone call or email after 48 hours have passed, please email us at austingpr@gmail.com. We will not contact you if the application is incomplete (i.e. you only fill out your contact information and possibly pet history).
