This "black beauty" sugar glider is 5 years old. She was adopted at 2 months old and brought home by some experienced glider parents. The couple did everything in the book to try bonding with Bella but they could not escape the reality - sugar gliders NEED companions of their own kind! The couple had been lucky in the past to keep a solo glider who bonded to them. But Bella has been anxious and refused to bond for 5 years. She has been taken for regular vet trips to get her nails trimmed and consistent checkups. The owners tried buying her a huge cage, letting her free roam the house (not safe and not recommended!), carrying her around in a bonding pouch, and all kinds of hand fed treats over the years. Finally they agreed with the vet that this glider must have a companion to feel safe and happy, before she could ever bond with a human (it may never happen!) and hope become a handleable pet someday. <br/><br/>Bella will require an experienced owner with a spare cage, another sugar glider or colony, and time that they are willing to spend trying to bond her with the other glider. Sometimes gliders like this are lonely and they gladly accept friends! The other partner(s) will also have to agree to accept her and it may take some time. Please look up videos on bonding techniques if you've not bonded gliders together very many times. Sometimes gliders like this are so anxious & defensive that they don't know they're lonely, and they can be difficult to convince to bond to other gliders. But they definitely thrive in the end when they learn to accept friendship!!<br/><br/>Upon assessment she seems to be in decent health. With the exception of overgrooming (short fur on her hind end that has been damaged by anxious licking) and some stress diarrhea, she was a bouncy, energetic, observant glider during tent time. She was pouch protective but after I got her out of the sleeping pouch she didn't crab anymore. I did not attempt to pet or hold her but she did not lunge out to bite me either which is 1 good sign! I was under the impression that she is very crabby but Bella was more occupied by taking in the environment and climbing around than caring too much about me. I put her into her new cage in the glider room and she was in awe seeing other sugar gliders in there. For the first time since leaving her mom, she's got buddies to talk to! I checked periodically throughout the night and even when the other gliders were all sleeping, Bella was out looking around. She's quite an active girl and hopefully she takes to bonding really well. If an experienced owner with another glider does not come forward to adopt her in a few weeks, we will begin trying to pair her with another glider while she is here, to eventually be adopted as a pair. <br/><br/>Bella was not being fed a consistent diet previously. We have started her on the TPG fresh diet & vitamins which we highly recommend for adopters to look into. We will need to discuss the brands of your cage, wheel, pouch/accessories, and diet before approving adoption. Even though you may be glider experienced, there is a LOT of misinformation about these animals. Many glider owners order things marketed for sugar gliders but don't know that they are mass produced deadly products that are not specialty made for sugar gliders' safety. Please don't take the screening questions personally, I require EVERY owner to talk thru the same points so I know that they have received all the proper info! We require safe supplies by approved brands that have been made for these animals and tested safe over the years.
