Volt's Story

Intake date: 8/27/25
Status: Available

Volt is a juvenile mangrove monitor who was found outside in a ditch in coastal NC. He was originally in really rough shape - emaciated, dehydrated, and lethargic. Volt responded really well to supportive care and hydration and is now a feisty, active monitor! He has a fantastic appetite and will eat insects, fish, shrimp, and fuzzy mice. Volt is agile and FAST. He will bolt into your hand for a treat but will retreat back to his enclosure to eat it. He is very intelligent and we think he could come around to handling, but he will need a dedicated and experienced adopter. His adoption fee is $100.

Monitors are not beginner pets and require large enclosures and dedicated keepers. Our minimum recommended enclosure size for Volt right now is a 4' x' 2' x 4', but eventually we would recommend a 4' x 4' x 6'. You can use a grow tent as long as it is appropriately modified, a PVC enclosure, or a wooden enclosure that is properly sealed. Please do not apply for this animal if you plan to use a glass tank. We recommend doing a lot of research about this species prior to applying; he is NOT for beginners.

PLEASE READ!
If you are interested in adopting this animal, you need to fill out an application at https://bewildnc.org/apply/. Read the application carefully and answer the questions thoroughly. Above all, be honest! Research the species you would like to adopt in advance and consult multiple sources, we are happy to answer questions. We do NOT ship; adopters must pick up in Durham, NC within 7 days of approval.
