Dasha's Story

Intake date: 8/24/25
Status: Available

**This animal CANNOT be adopted out to North Carolina or other restricted states. She MUST be adopted out of state to a state where they are legal. We do ship species that must go out of state to approved adopters, who are responsible for shipping costs.**

Dasha is an adult female Argentine black and white tegu. She came to us thin and very defensive and it took several months for her to stop charging us and trying to bite. Dasha has done really well with gentle patience and lots of snacks. She will now approach us and let us pet her but she is still a long way from fully trusting us. Dasha would be best for an experienced reptile owner who has worked with large lizards or snakes before. She will take food from us, which is a good sign, but she is not comfortable being picked up. Tegus are very intelligent though and we've generally had good success taming after lots of patience and treats. Her adoption fee is $100.

Tegus are not beginner pets and require large enclosures and dedicated keepers. Our minimum recommended enclosure size for Dasha is 8' x 4' x 4'. We use and recommend grow tents as they are an affordable housing option that keep heat and humidity well for this tropical species. Please do not apply for this animal if you plan to use a glass tank. We recommend doing a lot of research about this species prior to applying.

PLEASE READ!
If you are interested in adopting this animal, you need to fill out an application at https://bewildnc.org/apply/. Read the application carefully and answer the questions thoroughly. Above all, be honest! Research the species you would like to adopt in advance and consult multiple sources, we are happy to answer questions. We can arrange shipping at the adopter's expense for an approved adopter, or the adopter can pick up in person. We will work with the NCWRC to get an export permit; we cover this $10 cost and filing the paperwork.
