Buddy

- Buddy is a 7-month-old African Nile Monitor that was found outside in Berks County in November. Sadly, this type of monitor is often farmed from the wild in Africa and shipped here to be sold cheaply to anyone with $40.<br/>- Buddy is currently eating a variety of gut loaded insects, raw fish and chicken, and an occasional frozen/thawed rodent that can be fed from tongs – this took awhile for him to do.<br/>- Nile monitors are very defensive by nature and will take a long time to begin to trust any human. It is very possible he will never be fully tamed.<br/>- Nile monitors require an extremely large enclosure as adults – large enough to fit a small pond or bathtub. As they grow, they spend more and more time around and in water. He will eventually require a custom-built habitat.<br/>- Nile monitors like a basking side of 90-100% and a varying humidity of 60-75%.<br/>- As babies they spend a lot of time underground so providing an enclosure with deep substrate is a must. We use reptisoil.<br/>- They also like to climb so providing branches and trees will be beneficial.<br/>- This is a smart animal and needs enrichment – adding and moving things in the enclosure, giving them a large variety of foods, and letting them hunt insects will help.<br/>- He will also need a sunglo bulb for daytime heat, UVA/UVB bulb (changed out every 3-4 months), and ceramic heat emitter for the nights.<br/>Buddy will only be placed in a home that has extensive large defensive lizard experience and can provide proof of proper set up prior to adoption. I would also not recommend him in a home with small children – Nile monitors can cause serious damage to fingers and toes, and they are also incredibly food motivated.<br/>Currently he is in a common room of our home where is sees everything that goes on, we talk to him often and can clean and move things about in his enclosure. He is not at the point he can be handled without him reacting negatively. This type of monitor will need to be slowly socialized – never forced interactions.
