Intake date: 7/17/25<br/>Status: Available 8/16/25<br/><br/>Abel is an adult male Russian tortoise that was found as a stray in Chapel Hill. We're not sure if he escaped his previous enclosure or was intentionally released, but his previous owners have not come forward. Abel is in good shape and has some mild shell deformities that do not affect his quality of life. He has a good appetite and is easy to work with. Abel's adoption fee is $50.<br/><br/>Tortoises require both indoor and outdoor enclosures. Abel will require at least a 4x2x2 indoor enclosure for the winter months and a 4'x4' outdoor enclosure for the warmer months. Tortoises do really well outdoors and benefit from natural sunlight and the ability to forage and burrow. Russian tortoises should only eat grasses, greens, and weeds, and are NOT a fruit-eating species.
