SHIRLEY's Story

SHIRLEY and several other adoptable pet rabbits will be featured at our "Adopt the Easter Bunny" event this Saturday at the Berman Center for Animal Care on Newburgh Road in Westland, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Happy bunnies live in pairs, and Shirley is already pair-bonded with her sister, Laverne! You can adopt both sweet spayed girls for just $30, and you will have the lovliest snow-white New Zealand pets! Shirley is a little bigger than her sister, at 5 lbs. They were found lost outdoors by a kind person who brought them to our Detroit shelter for care. At MHS, the girls were spayed and litter-trained. They are now living with a kind foster care family getting all ready to be the STARS of the rabbit event. Shirley is about 18 months old. Come meet them on Saturday!

Rabbits love leaf lettuce and carrot tops and a little bit of fresh fruit as a treat. They can stretch up tall and twist and bounce, while at other times be quite lazy. Rabbits are quiet pets, making very few sounds. All MHS rabbits come with a free appointment at our vet center if anything goes wrong within the first 10 days (treatments are adopter's responsibility). In addition, a free book on bunny care comes with each adoption. At this special event, rabbit adopters will also get a special Easter basket with bunny toys, treats, supplies, and a $10 gift card to PetSmart!

Adopters must be at least 18 years of age, bring valid photo identification showing current address, and be prepared to provide appropriate housing (exercise pen or roomy cage) plus care for their new pet. Rabbits live an average of 6 to 10 years, do not get regular vaccinations, and live indoors. They make good pets for families as long as children learn to handle them with respect. Bunnies eat salad everyday, along with timothy hay, rabbit pellets and fresh water. They can get along with polite dogs and cats, and may like to live with another bunny as they are social, so if you have a lonely single bunny, feel free to bring your rabbit to the event for some "bunny speed-dating." Rabbit experts will be on hand to answer your questions and help you meet the bunnies for best selection. All family members are encouraged to attend. See you on Saturday!
