Laika's Story

A brief history of Laika: A while back we received an email from a girl attending a local high school that her FFA (Future Farmers of America) bunny had an injured paw that was not healing. Neither she nor the school could take her to a vet. To prevent the rabbit from suffering any longer, we brought her into the rescue and took her to our vet. The vet said that her bones were exposed on two toes, and they needed to be amputated. Shortly thereafter, we found a white spot in Laika's eye, which our vets suspected was E. cuniculi. E cuniculi is a pathogen that is very common in domestic rabbits and usually does not result in health issues; when it does cause problems, these can include eye infections. Laika tested positive for EC so her eye was removed. Since that time, she has been progressing beautifully. She has fully recovered from her surgeries and she is no longer taking medication for the EC.

Laika has put her frightening experiences behind her and is adjusting well to house rabbit life and to receiving love and attention. If approached from her blind side she can easily become startled, so be sure to approach her from her good side. She is also sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements, so she would probably do best in a quiet home without dogs or children. She is okay with the cats in her foster home, but automated cat toys that make noises and zip around would probably spook her. Laika greatly enjoys being petted (after being approached gently) and also has a great enthusiasm for bunny-safe chew toys. She has, so far, not shown any interest in chewing on baseboards or furniture.

Another favorite activity of hers is digging - unfortunately, in her litter box. To prevent litter pellets and hay and poop nuggets from being catapulted all over the room, Laika uses a large plastic bin as a litter box. To further subdue the litter tornado, Laika's foster mom uses a plastic grid, which she places on top of the litter and then puts the hay on top of that. If using a grid, please make sure the holes are small enough that her toes can't get caught.

And like most rabbits, Laika enjoys ample food routinely provided! Breakfast for Laika consists of 1/4 cup of Oxbow pellets and lots of fresh hay. After breakfast gets a bunny-safe treat. For supper she gets a salad, consisting of baby Romaine leaves, cilantro, small amounts of parsley, dandelion greens, green leaf lettuce, as available, and refills of hay and water. Before bedtime she gets anther bunny-safe treat.

Laika can be shy at first because of her vision impairment, but once she gets to know you and you are both familiar with each other's ways she will greatly enjoy petting and loving and sitting next to you on the couch. Laika would do best in a quiet home with patient and loving humans, and perhaps a gentle cat or two. She may also like meeting a husbun. Due to her condition, it is best that he also be an EC exposed bunny.

We adopt to indoor homes only! If you are interested in adopting a bunny from Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions, or would like more information on rabbit care, please visit our website at: http://www.orlandorabbit.org. If you don't see the email in a day or two, please check your spam folder.

Our Adoption Fee/Donation for a single rabbit is $100, a pair is $170, and a triple is $200. This helps to offset the cost of having the rabbits altered, microchipped and vaccinated, as well as any medical care that may have been required.
