Kono's Story

Warning: if you meet this rabbit, he will steal your heart! Kono is a very lovely boy who will make a wonderful addition to his new family.

Kono came to us after being abandoned behind a rec centre. Although he was skinny when found, he is very clearly a well socialized rabbit so we know that he was loved at some point. He loves head scratches, cuddling on the couch, racing around the house, and taking snacks from your hand. He sounds like a hummingbird as he does figure eights around his foster mom's legs and hums as he hops along. He loves sage as a treat, and eats his hay well. Although Kono is limited in how many pellets he gets every day (we have to keep his waist line in check) he eats them like he'll never see food again. Therefore, it's important that he goes to a home with someone who can provide appropriate food amounts throughout the day. He will get very fat if he's just given a filled bowl to snack on.

Kono lives inside and likes to explore. He has an ex-pen area with lots of steps, boxes, and toys to keep him safe and entertained when he's unsupervised. However, when Kono's foster mom is home, he is allowed to access the home. He doesn't seem interested in chewing base boards or cords (although it's always important to keep cords away from rabbits) and is happiest just running in circles, doing binkies. Although Kono is still working on his litter box training, he is doing well so far.

There is a cat in Kono's foster home, and while they are never allowed together unsupervised, he doesn't seem phased by having the cat around. At time, he can be a bit stampy if the cat comes near his enclosure while he's eating, but he's certainly not afraid of the cat. While Kono doesn't live with children, he has been around them and seems comfortable with kids that understand how to handle him correctly and safely.

We don't know exactly how old Kono is but our vet estimates that he's about 2-3 years old. He is in good health and his teeth look good. He's obviously got some Harlequin in him based on his size and his markings, he does not seem to be purebred. He weighs about 2kg and is neutered. We have not seem Kono around other rabbits, but he seems content being an 'only child' especially when he has humans that are around to pay lots of attention to him.

Kono has just been neutered so will be ready to go to his new home in early April, however, we are accepting adoption applications for him now. Victoria Pet Adoption Society's Adoption Policy
Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment and a big responsibility. Dogs can live 15 years or more, and cats can live 20+ years. Like people, each individual pet comes with its own set of baggage, needs, and personality traits. Because your new pet will depend on you to provide its basic needs, we need to be sure that you are educated and up to the challenge. Our adoption process allows us to ask you some questions about your home environment, your lifestyle, and your needs, expectations, and limitations. We want to be sure that your new pet is going to be just as happy in its new home as you are to have it there. A Successful Adoption Process Includes the Following Steps: To start the adoption process, please complete the online adoption application found at https://victoriapets.ca/adoption-process/. If our adoption team feels as though your home will be a great fit for one of our pets they will contact you to set up a visit supervised by the foster parent who can answer some of the questions you may have about the animal of interest. You will not be able to take the pet home the day of the visit. One of our volunteers will contact you after the visit and will open a dialogue with you based on the information provided in your application. We will talk about your home and family, as well as your experience with pets. We will ask you to tell us about the kind of life and care you can offer to the adopted pet, and we will inform you about any health or behavioural issues that you should be aware of. (For dogs only) Once an adoption is pending, we will come visit your home to ensure that the environment is suitable for the pet in question, based on its needs. We can advise you of modifications that could make the adoption more successful, such as fencing and other things you may not have thought about. The adoption process generally takes several days, and this time line is intentional. It allows you time to think about your decision so that you can be sure that you are comfortable with the decision that you’ve made. Adoptions are never approved within 48 hours of the application being submitted. Once we have successfully journeyed through the steps above, you can pick up your new friend to begin a wonderful life together! Signing an adoption contract is a requirement for every pet that is adopted. Adoption Fees are as Follows: Kittens (up to 12 months of age) $400 Adult Cats (1 yr - 8yrs) $300 Senior Cats (9 yrs and older) $250 Special Needs Cats (other than kittens) $250 Puppies (up to 12 months of age) $600 Adult Dogs (1 yr - 8yrs) $400 Senior Dogs (9 yrs and older) $300 Special Needs dogs (other than puppies) $300 Rabbits $50 Guinea Pigs $30 Rats/hamsters $20 Mice $10 Adoption fees for other species may vary
