Cheese Wiz's Story

The dumped rabbit crisis is officially out of control.

We were in the middle of celebrating a 9 year old’s birthday party at Dolly’s - cake, balloons, kids learning how to properly pet a rabbit - when two separate dumped bunny calls came in.

Two.

During a birthday party.

Our director left the party, rescued Baconator, and before she was even back, we deployed our volunteer rescue team for bunny number two. It felt appropriate.

We think he’s about a year old, maybe a bit younger. He is shockingly friendly for a rabbit who’s been surviving outside for at least a month, according to neighbors. A whole month dodging predators, weather, cars, and humans.

He appears to be either double cryptorchid or already neutered. Double cryptorchid means both testicles failed to descend into the scrotum, which happens sometimes in male rabbits. If that’s the case, he’ll need a more specialized neuter surgery because the testicles remain in the abdomen. If he’s already neutered, we’ll confirm that too. Our vet will sort it out, but he was over being examined.

What we can confirm is this: he’s sweet. Very sweet. Whoever dumped him sucks.

We cannot wrap our heads around it.

Two dumped rabbits in one afternoon. During a child’s birthday party. This is not rare anymore. It’s constant.

If you’d like to help us cover his vetting, we would be so grateful. Rescues like this are urgent and expensive: http://dollysdreamhome.org/donate

Cheese Whiz is safe tonight…but there are more out there.
