Big Bertha 's Story

Big Bertha update!

One of the wildest, most heartbreaking, and ultimately most hopeful stories of 2025 belongs to Big Bertha.

We got a message about a dumped bunny who had been sitting in the exact same spot all night. We were completely full, but something about it didn’t sit right. Why would she sit out in the open? Why wouldn’t she try to run away when being caught? So we said yes anyway. And thank goodness we did.

When she arrived, she was listing to one side and couldn’t lift her head. Her first vet visit didn’t give us answers, so we pushed for a second opinion with a specialist immediately. That decision saved her life.

Big Bertha had been poisoned with antifreeze.

Her organs were shutting down. She was blind. Her chances of survival were well under 30%. As we learned more, it became clear this wasn’t an accident. Someone in the apartment complex had intentionally put antifreeze out to poison cats. Because it smells and tastes sweet, it’s incredibly dangerous to animals. A dumped, dehydrated bunny never stood a chance against it.

She spent 5 days hospitalized, fighting for her life.

And then…she turned a corner. Her vision returned. Her bloodwork started improving. Every follow up since has been nothing short of amazing. She’s now stable, thriving, and almost ready for her spay.

Is she spicy? Absolutely. Is she kind of mean? Of course. She earned that. After everything she survived, she gets to have opinions.

Today, she’s sprawled out in a massive pile of hay, completely unbothered, ruling her space like the queen she is.

Big Bertha should not be here. But she is.

Long live the queen.
