Benji's Story

Meet Benji! Rabbits can be wonderful pets if they are provided the proper habitat, food and care during their lifetime. Rabbits are prey animals, which means they can be nervous if picked up suddenly or handled in a way the rabbit is uncomfortable. Rabbits like affection, but they also want it on their own terms. Once they have built trust with their owner they will show you how they are comfortable interacting.

Rabbits need space to run and exercise, but also like their own space to create their rabbit homes. They can be particular with their set up of food, water and litter pan, and will communicate in their own way if they do or don't like something. Rabbits eat 80% hay and the rest of their diet is filled with pellets and fresh greens or other veggies. Carrots should only be considered a treat as they are high in natural sugar.

Finally, the health of a rabbit is essential to a long life. A rabbit can live to be 10 years old, so please make sure you are ready to commit to the lifetime of a rabbit. Finding a veterinarian that sees rabbits is key before adopting. Also, regular visits help ensure your rabbit is not suffering from disease or illness, as rabbits tend to hide symptoms for as long as possible.

Rabbits have a ton of personality and like any animal, need mental stimulation along with physical activity. Make sure you have proper toys, chew balls and other DIY rabbit fun so your rabbit does not chew on cords, walls, etc.

For more information on owning a rabbit, contact our animal care team today! Florida Keys SPCA's Adoption Policy
We have 2 locations that pets may be adopted from. One in Key West and one in Marathon. Please note which location the pet is located at before going to that location when interested in adopting. For any questions, please call us directly. We ask that adopters look at our available animals online or do a meet & greet at the shelter and once they have decided on a pet they are interested in, they complete an adoption questionnaire. They then meet with an adoption counselor to ensure it is a match for both the animal and the person interested, as well to discuss the animal's history, health and current needs or behaviors if known. If the adopter has a dog and is adopting another dog, we do a meet & greet between the two dogs on neutral grounds. If it is determined this is a good match, the adopter completes their paperwork, pays the adoption fee and takes the animal home.
