Our Mission

Who We Are: Founded in 1891, the Chemung County SPCA is the oldest non-profit animal welfare organization in our region, and one of the oldest continuously-operating animal welfare organizations in the country. Our Mission: To enhance the quality of life for companion animals in Chemung County and surrounding areas by promoting better futures for pets and their people. In addition to adopting cats and dogs, the CCHS/SPCA also offers affordable spay/neuter clinics, vaccination clinics, end-of-life services, a community cat spay/neuter program, and a pet food pantry, for pet owners in the area. The SPCA also provides humane education programs and volunteering opportunities to members of the public. For more information about these programs and services, please visit our website: www.chemungspca.org

Adoption Policy

Only completed applications will be processed by the SPCA Adoption Counselors - please make sure that all of the necessary fields are complete and accurate. Submission of an adoption application does not guarantee an adoption nor does it immediately qualify one for an adoption. Only approved applications can secure a courtesy hold on a specific animal. We may take multiple applications to ensure the best fit for the animal. Applications are not selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. Once your application is approved, a Meet and Greet is required for all dog adoptions and recommended for cat adoptions to help ensure the animal is a good match for you and all members of your family. If you are looking to add another dog to your home, your current canine(s) will need to come in with you to the shelter to meet their potential new housemate. We highly encourage all members of your household to come in to meet your potential new pet to make sure everyone gets along. Applications are kept on file for 6 months during which time the potential adopters may come in to meet with any of the adoptable animals at the shelter. While all of our animals undergo behavioral testing to find the right matches for their furever homes, we do not test dogs with cats at the shelter, but rather, rely on what the previous owner shares with us about the pet's prior experience with other animals.
