Our Mission

MEOW Refuge is an artist-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit cat sanctuary based in Roswell, New Mexico. The refuge provides long-term, humane care for feral, abandoned, elderly, injured, and surrendered cats in a region where animal welfare resources are extremely limited. The sanctuary is located on a secure, tree-shaded acre with indoor and outdoor spaces designed for enrichment and long-term care, allowing cats to live natural lives with dignity. MEOW continues the legacy of local animal advocate Mary McGee, who ran a cat refuge on the property for more than 30 years. Incorporated in 2023, MEOW is now run by artists and volunteers. Alongside animal rescue, the organization is developing shared creative spaces on site, including plans for a ceramics studio that will support local artists while helping sustain the refuge’s ongoing care of animals.

Adoption Policy

We aim to place cats in safe, stable indoor homes and take time to make sure each adoption is a good fit. Adopters complete a brief application and have a conversation with us so we can match cats to appropriate homes. Adoption fees help cover basic medical care, and we remain available for support after adoption. Kittens are not adopted out before 12 weeks of age, and we strongly encourage kittens to be adopted in pairs to prevent single kitten syndrome and support healthy social development. Because adoption opportunities in Roswell are limited, we also partner with better-resourced rescue organizations in larger cities to place adoptable cats when that offers the best chance of a successful adoption. If an adoption doesn’t work out, cats are always welcome back at MEOW.
