Founded in 2005, the North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue, Inc. was created to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home unwanted guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, pet rats, mice and other pocket pets. We are a "no kill" shelter that seeks to place these animals in loving homes, no matter how long it takes. We are located in Budd Lake, NJ.
THE RESCUE ACCEPTS PAYPAL
You may make a donation by clicking on the link above our adoption application.
GOING ON VACATION? We offer boarding services. For $10 a day per cage, we provide unlimited timothy hay/pellets, a bowl of fresh greens/veggies twice daily, daily cage cleaning and a nail trim if needed.
IF YOU NEED TO SURRENDER AN ANIMAL TO THE RESCUE, as of April 26, 2020, we are accepting, guinea pigs, pet rats, chinchillas, rabbits, degus, hamsters, gerbils, and mice
Please know we do not euthanize due to lack of space.
Please do not list pets for free on Craigslist or other classified ads. Many of these animals will be used as snake food or pit bull bait. Please ask for a modest re-homing fee. This will help ensure your pet goes to a home where it will be loved and well cared for.
If you are looking for a great exotics savvy vet, we recommend our rescue's vet, The Animal Clinic of Morris Plains at 3009 Route 10 East in Morris Plains. Too far from Morris Plains? Go to the House Rabbit website at www.rabbit.org, where they have a list of vets for your state and/or county.
We recommend Oxbow brand pellets and hay. They are high quality, timothy based products.
ARE YOU AN AMAZON CUSTOMER?
If you are an amazon customer and you would like a percentage of your purchases to come to the rescue, simply go to smile.amazon.com and select the North Jersey Guinea Pig and Hamster Rescue, Inc. as your charity. Every penny we receive goes directly to the care and comfort of the animals!
We ask $35 for a single guinea pig, $55 for a pair and $65 for a trio. For a syrian hamster, we ask $15, for a pair of gerbils or dwarf hamsters $20.
We recommend a minimum cage size of 32" by 20" for a single piggie, 36" by 20" for a pair of females and 39" by 20" for a pair of males. Ideally, you should obtain the largest cage you have room for. The rescue has gently used cages available for an additional donation to the rescue. Each cage comes with a hidey house, food bowls, water bottle with holder and a sleep sack/cuddle cup.
Most cage beddings are safe to use with the exception of cedar (toxic fumes) and corn cob (easily ingested and can cause digestive blockages)
The rescue can always use:
Oxbow or Small Pet Select Timothy hay/pellets
Cage Bedding (no cedar or corn cob)
Fragrance Free laundry detergent
