Our Mission
Mission Statement
Callaway Hills Animal Shelter is a private, non profit, no kill shelter dedicated to protecting and vastly improving the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned dogs and cats by providing them with a safe haven.
For over 30 years we have rescued as many homeless pets as our space and finances allow, without regard to breed, age, health, special needs or ease of placement. Each receives quality, compassionate care, including the best of veterinary treatment in addition to their spay or neuter.
All animals we take in find a forever home, either with an approved new adoptive family or in our shelter's sanctuary and hospice. The shelter remains interested and committed to their welfare beyond the adoption process.
We believe every dog and cat is a unique soul, worthy of being loved and protected throughout their lifetime
Adoption Policy
CHAS requires potential adopters to complete our adoption application and get it approved before adopting a pet. (We will be happy to email or mail you one.) The person responsible must be at least 18 years of age. Our animals are in need of loving homes. They don’t care about your race, gender, income or whether you have status in the community, so why should we? Our goal is solely to find them responsible, caring, forever homes. Part of that involves doing our best to place a particular dog or cat in a home that will be a comfortable fit for them as well as their adoptor.
PLEASE, PLEASE try not to take it personally or get upset with us if you aren’t selected for the pet you wanted. Rarely is it because we deem a person an unfit pet parent! Unlike public shelters we are not a simply 1st come, 1st served facility. Nor do we hoard animals as a few mean-spirited folks claim, when they or a friend were denied one for any reason. We do have some dogs who have been with us awhile. Each has its own story.
If you want to adopt a dog ASAP, you’ll likely have a better experience at a public shelter. It takes us a bit of time to screen applications. We are a private shelter, dependent on donations. Unlike the government funded or far larger organizations, we lack the resources to employ adoption counselors and the like. Just a few of us, who admittedly get behind... So, if your adoption application is not processed within a week to 10 days, please email or call and we’ll check on its status and get back to you quickly. Apologies for any inconvenience that results from our lack of speed and thank you so much for looking at our pets!
