Our Mission
Animal Humane Society fulfills its mission to engage the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals by finding pets loving homes, providing low-cost veterinary care to the public, helping community members care for their pets during times of crisis, protecting animals from abuse and neglect, advancing legislation benefiting pets, and inspiring more compassion toward animals through education and community engagement. AHS serves the community through shelter locations in Golden Valley, Coon Rapids, and Woodbury, and low-cost veterinary centers in Golden Valley and St. Paul.
As the need for animal services and support in the Twin Cities area has increased, AHS has expanded dramatically to become more than a shelter. AHS employs the only full-time humane agents in Minnesota, who are dedicated to investigating cases of animal cruelty across the state. Our community-focused programming includes affordable veterinary care, a pet helpline, pet food and supply distribution, temporary pet housing for people experiencing short-term crisis, and more. Pets and people belong together, and we work hard every day to make that a reality.
Adoption Policy
Animal Humane Society's friendly adoption staff will work with you to find the right dog, cat, or critter for your home. Get started by checking our online adoption listings (updated every 20 minutes) or stop by one of our adoption centers in the Twin Cities metro area, including Coon Rapids, Golden Valley, and Woodbury.
If you wish to put an animal on hold or to adopt an animal from AHS, you must be present at an AHS adoption center. We will not put animals on an adoption hold via a phone or email request. It's important you spend time getting to know prospective pets.
If you find an animal you wish to adopt, we’ll sit down for an informal consultation to ensure that you and the pet you’ve selected are a good match. During this process we'll also review the animal’s medical and behavioral records, explain policies and services available to adopters, and help you choose the right pet supplies.
