Our Mission

The mission of the Chicago Herpetological Society (CHS) is to educate its members and the general public; to promote the conservation of all wildlife in general and of herpetofauna in particular; and to achieve a closer cooperation and understanding between amateur and professional herpetologists.

Adoption Policy

First step is that we have someone complete an adoption application (see link below). Then we reach out to them for a conversation over the phone about care, what they are looking for, and how good of a grasp on this species they have. Many reptiles live decades and require specialized care so we are very thorough with our questioning. Then we have a "meet and greet" where the potential adopter comes and meets with the animal they are interested in adopting. If all goes well with the meet and greet, we allow the person to take home same day. If there are lingering concerns, we hang on to the animal and continue to work with the person until we can find the best fit for them even if that might not be a reptile at that time.
