Island Dog International Dog Rescue

Groveland, FL

Our Mission

We are a small rescue located in Groveland Florida, dedicated to finding homes for pets currently located in the Humane Society of Grand Bahama (Potcakes) and around Florida. Island Dog typically requests the pets who have a lesser chance of finding a home due to behavioral issues, energy levels, ones who do not do well in a shelter environment, health issues and any other reason that would cause them to be overlooked. We then rehab those pets, socialize them, perform some behavior modifications if necessary and top it off with some basic obedience, prior to finding them their ideal forever home!

Not sure what a Potcake is? It's okay, neither were we!

Potcakes are dogs found on several different Carribean islands. They get their name from the pea's and rice mixture, which was traditionally fed to dogs after being leftover from family meals. Potcakes are typically around 45-50 pounds, about 24 inches at their withers and live approximately 10-12 years (only 3 years when they are strays). They are known to be intelligent, loyal, calm, bond easily with their owners and are resilient.

Frequently Potcakes resemble hounds, mastiffs, terriers, spaniels and/or retrievers. Their appearance does vary by Island and they are officially a recognized breed in the Bahamas!

Adoption Policy

Once you find a pet you may be interested in, you will begin the process below. Pets are not adopted based on order of application, but instead are matched based on the best fit for the pet and the best fit for the family.

SUBMIT AN APPLICATION

The first step in adopting one of Island Dogs pets is to submit an application. Applications can be found on the right side of this page or requested by emailing islanddogrescue@yahoo.com. Once we receive your application we will review the information you provided and upon approval set up a meet and greet between you and the animal you are interested in. If there is a concern we have regarding your application we will let you know.

MEET AND GREET

If your application is approved we will contact you to set up a time for you to meet the pet you are interested in. If you and the pet appear to be a good match, we will then contact your vet, references and landlord (if applicable).

HOME CHECK

The last step in the application process is to do a home check. This step not only allows for you to interact with the pet you may adopt to make sure it is the right choice for your family, but also for the pet to be introduced to your home and make sure it is the right environment for him or her. If the home check is successful, we will provide you with the adoption paperwork and you can welcome your new pet into your home!
