Our Mission
Homeward Bound CT is a group of dedicated volunteers who’s only goal is to help rescues find forever homes for the dogs they’ve pulled from municipal pounds, high kill shelters, and taken in as owner surrenders or strays. These individuals are the real heroes. They open their homes and hearts to dogs that others have turned their backs on. They feed them, provide vet care, and shower them with love. It’s because of these amazing people that we are able to help so many dogs find safe, loving homes.
How do we help so many dogs find homes? We scout and secure locations for our adoption events, promote the events and the dogs attending, pre-screen potential adopters, and supply wonderful volunteers to do the heavy lifting during our events. We also support the rescues by providing follow-up home visits after each adoption, reaching out to trainers, and are available to all adopters at any time after they go home with their new dog. We do this all at no cost to any of the rescues, as we cover all location costs and supplies. All adoption fees go directly to the rescues to help cover the expenses they’ve incurred. Normally, the adoption fees don’t even come close to covering their expenses, but the rescues aren’t in this for the money.
Homeward Bound CT has also created a Spay it Forward CT program, where we raise funds and solicit local veterinarians to help us spay and neuter Connecticut shelter dogs.
Adoption Policy
We take the time to make sure the adopter is truly a good candidate by checking veterinary references as well as personal references. If they rent or are in a situation where there may be pet policies we confirm that it's okay for them to adopt a dog.
We take time interviewing the adopter and make sure the dog they are looking for is a good fit for their family. Our goal is not to adopt to the first adopter but to make sure they are the best fit for the dog and visa versa.
We have trainers to do meet and greets with their dogs and require the entire family is present to make sure all are on board. We do not adopt sight unseen but make sure there is a true connection.
